What's the catch with all the HoneyStudio novels?

I am seeing all these extremely successful games that seem to be little more than HoneyStudio scenes with relatively simple text tacked on. I also see they rack up quite the revenue in annual 6 digits on Patreon, sometimes with minimal effort (stock skins and clothes etc, in one case I saw a whole stock character even)

What's the catch here?

I'd argue that it is saturated. You see HS/Koikatsu games everywhere; but only the big ones are widely noticed.
As for the litigation, who knows. I've seen someone argue that it's not cost effective to sue a small game dev, though I don't think it would be that costly as it's a pretty straightforward copyright infringement.

My best guess is that they don't see it as an issue and maybe even see it as free advertisement. Who knows.

So they simply don't care? I'd think Illusion would at least try to get something out of it, like say, the licenses from SpaceEngine where you pay an extra $60 for the dev's blessing to create commercial content with the game.

I suppose they're somewhat successful because it's so much easier to churn out animations than with daz3d or similar render software.
Sure, it's mediocre content at best, but there's usually a lot of it.

So much easier is an understatement here. It's obnoxiously simple.

Like, playing the in-game character creation is the entire overhead. Then it takes like 5 mins to set up the scene and seconds of effort per frame per "animation".

I'd at least think some would attempt stuff like polishing through render engines, use custom textures, smooth out animations etc. but no. It's always simple in-game screenshots with caption

If they wanted to put real effort into the visuals they wouldn't have chosen HS as the basis to begin with.
Either way, if it sells then good for them.

Eh, maybe.
Honestly you could create a better a much better looking character (skin texture, imperfections, etc.) in daz3d. Hell even I could do that and I have only fiddled with it for a few hours, though the lighting in that dark setting would kill my laptop.

I feel that once you start fine-tuning and editing you're probably better off with a different platform. On the other hand, if you're all about quantity and want to release a 0.1 with 20 animated scenes then HS is the way to go.

You know, this gives me an idea. Maybe HS is not meant for animated anything. If anything janky animations, lack of skin physics etc. are all detractors vs similarly easy but polished static scenes.

On a similar note, maybe the whole HS screenshot + RenPy viz novel combo is not meant for all those 20+ hour feature games either. Why not spend the same effort on 1-2 hour stories and publish full releases?

I really don't understand the hate that Honey Select games get. For me, an "average" HS game almost always is more enjoyable than an "average" game created in one of the other engines. The women generally have better looking bodies to me (wide hips, large breasts, thick legs) and the sex scenes look a lot more natural.

Now, the very, very best games created in other engines are absolutely better, and we're seeing more of those over the last six months or so. But even those generally have pretty limited content compared to what seems to be capable in the best HS games.

I am a huge fan of Max's Life and Dark Magic. They are two of my favorite adult games ever, and while the animation quality isn't perfect, it still is good. Others like Unlimited Pleasure and My New Neighbors are really hot too, and can achieve terrific results to make a hot porn game with the tools they have. The sex scenes might be a little over the top, but the way the female bodies giggle and move is sexy to me.

To me, I'd much rather watch what is essentially a high quality cartoon porn than something that looks like weird, lifeless manequins placed in poorly lighted apartments, which is how many of the others look to me. I hope that helps answer your question.

I was not really trying to hate on HS2 games. Mostly surprised to see one video game used to make other games.

As for the quotes around "animations", I mean the classic 4-5 frames taken as stills and stapled together with blur effects to meet the absolute minimum requirement to be even called that.

Otherwise like I said, it makes for a good templating tool to get sexy characters, especially with a little extra effort.
