The latter is more popular because it's a weighted rating.
Like Race of Life with rating 4.7 is on the first page, while Formula Zero with rating 5.0 is on the seventh page.
Because Race has 1285 reviews and 3M views while Formula has only 101 reviews and 49K views..

I guess it has a furry tag, so I can't find it, cause I put the tag on ignore

But as far as I understand, it's not all that simple with the calculation of the weighted rating and it seems that time is also taken into account, that is, old ratings are less important than new ones. And as far as I know, WMV has not been very popular lately, too many complaints.
However, the question is interesting, I did not find out how exactly the weighted rating is calculated.

that is my entire premise though, people are complaining about WVM because they are ACTUALLY PLAYING THE GAME whereas people are not complaining about Straight!? because they are ignoring it or filtered it out in searches

Two separate metrics. "Highest rated" is highest rating per capita of players. "Most popular' would be more along the number of downloads overall...and perhaps mixed in to rating with some algorithm that is as equally subjective.

I would suggest a female main character game with corruption and the MC actually acts like a woman. The corruption takes time and can be customized by whoever is doing it to you but it's designed to ensnare you in what you like. Sort of like it pokes at you to find your weakness or fetish and then it pushes gently on that more and more.

Corruption is not going to the first store and the manager fucks you for no reason and then you act innocent again, or where you are immediately turned into a slut.

I would have these options even not available to the player so you can only choose within the mindset of the character, and it takes time to become that wild slut.

Maybe add in drugs too because those are usually present when things like this happen to. But it has to be done in an elegant way and not a silly "imma rape you" way.

i agree, but the same thing applies to futa, furry, monster girl etc.

A very controversial fetish has many fans as well as many irreconcilable haters. If your game contains NTR, then sooner or later the anti-NTR brigade will come to your thread and start telling you and the visitors what crap NTR is, and therefore your game.

If my goal was to research what games are popular, I would simply list them sorted by weighted rating and look at the first few pages. That would give me a basic idea of what the average player likes.

I would also compare this information to a list of the most popular creators on Patreon and looked in what games they make, what art style they use, etc.

Thanks for the tip buddy, very good, my game is going in this direction. I already like to write stories, so I usually give them depth and time to develop, but unlike writing a book, as is the case with an erotic game, I'm going to balance the development of the characters with the sex itself.
