by definition and litteral transcription a video game need pictures and gameplay. A good video game need good pictures (animations or CG) and good gameplay, everything else is optional.

Visual novel are not games, they are just comic books in the form of a software. Just read adult comic or hentai online if the story is what matter to you.

The whole thing about adult games, is to manage to incorpore the porn/hentai/erotic part into a good gameplay. If you manage to do that, even if your main story and dialogs are super cliche, it will be a hit.
This comment is really helpful for me. I am not a good writer, so I can't focus much on the story. But I can work well with pictures and animation. My main focus is gameplay because a game must have a gameplay to be considered as a game. Anyway, thanks a lot for your comment.

I am! The logic is exactly as you have in regards to story, if I did not care about gameplay, I could just read a non-interactive work. There are tens of thousands of them, and some have good stories. That's not to say story isn't important in a porn game. It is.

You are correct that examples of "gameplay" we get are sometimes detrimental to the game. But what we often get shoesn't dictate our desires.
I have already thought a story for my very first game. It'll definitely have a gameplay and also good animations. Here is just the pieces of my thoughts.. and if you guys wanna suggest more, I welcome all of them warmly.

**Storyline:
The protagonist, Amara, is a brilliant doctor who is working in the GeneSys Company where genetics and technology experiments are tested. One day, an asteroid dropped near the beach of TownSquare City. A local citizen saw the asteroid and a strange living thing moving inside it. So he reported the company, so that GeneSys company came to test the asteroid.
Then the company brought it into their lab facility. Amara and her team had to work for testing the species inside the asteroid. The species is an alien species from a planet far away for millions of light years. The company knew that species can regenerate their body and then they got an idea to test further for developing a serum that can regenerate human body parts. But one day, the experiment went wrong. A doctor got in an accident and a tiny drop of blood from his hand dropped over the species. Then the species turned into red and exploded into pieces. The pieces jumped on the doctors in the experiment lab , and combined with their DNA , turning the doctors to horrible creatures. At that time, Amara was in the file locker room and suddenly heard an exploding sound. She didn't realize anything and then she disconnected with reality.
After a time, she woke up. And the lab facility is filled with creatures. She must find a way to leave while escaping from the creatures.

**Gameplay:
Players can't attack the creatures hand to hand but can use some items to slow down them. They can hide under tables or anywhere creatures can't see. They are good at hearing, so trying not to make loud noises is crucial. If they see the players, they will hunt. So the only way to escape is running. If they catch the player, they won't kill but horrible behaviors will be encountered (NSFW animations). Players need to drink water to speed up and heal. Some rooms are locked and players must solve puzzles to unlock. Some items are also needed by players to build. Players need to find the weapon to kill creatures and escape safely from the lab.

Yeah, that's a draft and I need to adjust it. I can also add combat but I'm not sure. But for now, it's a survival-horror game.

Ooof. That's a lot of words to say "a civilian gets trapped in a monster-infested area and needs to get out". That's not a story, really, it's a rather boring infodump. A story is something happening to the protagonist. In this case, what happens is... The girl goes to work, hears an explosion, loses consciousness. It isn't a very interesting story, is it?

My advice, get rid of it. The game starts, when the girl wakes up. No explanations needed.

Players can't attack the creatures hand to hand but can use some items to slow down them. They can hide under tables or anywhere creatures can't see. They are good at hearing, so trying not to make loud noises is crucial. If they see the players, they will hunt. So the only way to escape is running. That's a bit better. A stealth/survival ARPG isn't overdone, and can be pretty tense.

That said, the main thing that sucks about this type of games is that a good player will avoid getting fucked by monsters. That's a problem, because the main reason to play your game is to see those animations. You're kinda punishing skilled play, and rewarding intentional poor play. If you can think of a mechanic that turn this around it would be absolutely great.

I think the idea is sound, if much late 1990s (TR3, Alien, Resident Evil, ...) :D

yet, it sounds like difficult to make. "hiding out of vision, make no sound" - that's a desirable gameplay mechanic for wich you probably will not find a satisfying ready-to-go add-on, but sth. you'd need to code yourself. IF you can do that, and provide good sounds/soundediting it can be a real thrill, totally captivating, but in my estimation it is sth. for real pros. :(

anyways, good luck.
----

oh, forgot, wanted to comment on this:
I am not a good writer, so I can't focus much on the story.
Do not worry too much about the story. Characters are much more important anyways imo.
(I've played games with HORRIBLE stories, yet I may like them for gameplay, characters, dialogues, some scenes)

And roughly in the vein of what MarshmallowCasserole said, less may be more. Like, a really captivating stealth game in particular does not necessarily need much story - athmosphere (and consistent character(s)) are more important.

Oh thanks. I know that my game mechanic is not good for skilled players. I'll absolutely try to turn it around.

Thanks. This helps me a lot. I've ever played adult games ( most are VNs ). VNs are good but they have no gameplay that a true game should have. So I'm trying to focus on the gameplay mostly. We all know that what we mostly want from this types of game is such NSFW animations. But I want my game to be a game rather than "it's just an adult game".

Your comment strengthens my thoughts on "I can't work well with storylines" and I'll try my best with gameplay, characters, and animations.

Don't forget the replayability in your game. A game that last 2h even if fun will not give the same impact on its playerbase than a game that you can play for 300h.

Even if failing to give actual important story driven choices (which are 99% of the time just an illusion of choice and end up frsutrating the player), it's very important to give your players real gameplay choices, with restrictions.

Skill tree, inventory with limited space... everything that force the player to make a choice. "You either take this or that, you can't have both", "Do you want to be good at shooting or at melee ?" If i can do and get everything then nothing has any value. Give player a real reason to play your game again, and again.

Oh, I almost forgot about it. Thanks a lot for reminding me. I'll definitely make my game to be able to play again and again although it might be hard.

Gamers in general hate frustrating mechanics and things that slow down progression artificially. This is 10 times the case when you got one hand on your cock and are trying to bust a nut. If you make a fun game, though, people will play it regardless of sexual content and you might even be able to sell it on a major platform later. So I'd say make sure the game is fun, that it's coded well with few bugs, and that there's a clear "what to do next" progression so people don't waste hours clicking random parts of the screen in various combinations.

So if someone will make a game that you want, how do you want to play?
Rich storylines? Female protagonist? Etc etc...
Rich storyline. Visual Novel. Male MC.

I'd love to play a vampire-themed game set in something like the World of Darkness (the old one tho... the new one sucks balls). The MC gets bit and turned into a fledgling vamp, then falls down the rabbit hole of vampire society and all their politics and power plays. Lewd scenes would feature everything from female human blood dolls to ancient vamp mommies with a mean streak. All sex scenes optional, so Player can pick what they like and skip what they don't.

This really helps me in my game development. I recently wanted to make a game with combat scenes with multiple combinations. But I think it's much better to have fun.

There are no answers to such questions that contain the ultimate truth. First prefer female protagonist, second hate playing female protagonist, next insists to play only female protagonist.

And i would prefer to have gameplay and good detailed animated sex scenes. I don't care if it is a male or female protagonist.
Some good games have these really hot characters that scream to have sex, but there's nothing there.
Seriously: Life is strange with chloe, final fanatsy with tifa, nier automata with b2 and so on. How can such chracters not have sex?
That´s why i think it must be more than nice to have both. Gameplay and Sex.
But maybe i´m complete wrong, because i don´t think that there are any movie picture with a complete story and hardcore action. But i defenitly want to have more than only a sex simulator.

My thoughts are same as you. Since I played other adult games , I wanted it more than just a sex simulator. I want gameplay that makes me exciting animated sex scenes that make me relax.

I've already given ideas and advice to several people, but almost all of them gave up quickly. It would be good if you have enough persistence and enthusiasm.

Thanks.. I know that it's hard and stressful to develop games. But it is my dream since my childhood. I enjoy developing games (both NSFW or not). I am happy if I see only the unity UI. So I will try my best and I'm sure I won't lose my persistence. Thanks a lot for your comment.

When I play eroge I am fundamentally expecting a fun game, so the easy answer is gameplay. It doesn't matter how great the pornographic content is, if the game design doesn't hold up, it's not a good game. A "rich storyline" is only important for narrative-driven games so it's situational.
