Hi,
I am the developer of Magical Gene. Initially, our game had puzzles that the player had to solve in order to continue the game. We received many comments that the players had complained about these stages of the game. But some comments also suggested that they liked the puzzles. Finally, in the new version of the game, we added a cheat mode button to the beginning of the game, but the question was still in our minds, which style of Game do the players like? I decided to put it here for a poll.
The question is: which style of game do you like:

You like to solve puzzles and game riddles and get a sex scene as a reward, and the harder these puzzles are, the more attractive it is.

Easy riddles and puzzles are fun for adult games, but if it were too hard I would remove the game.

You like to skip the riddles and game puzzles and see the story and sexy scenes of the game.

If you have other responses comment to add them.

speaking personally in a game i like a little bit of challange of some sort just so the game doesen't feel like a big gallery but aside from it being a puzzle or a minigame the important thing is that it should not be frustrating ,puzzle and mini games are ok for me as long as they are enjoyable and maybe you could add an option to skip them if someone doesen't like doing them and an option to make them more challenging if someone is looking for that

I do enjoy when games implement Riddles, Puzzles, and Minigames in them that are hard and challenging, and makes you think for a second. But I can also understand when sometimes you just want to progress the story, and for that I appreciate when games also have a Skip, hint or walkthrough(?) provided that you can just look at.

I just don't enjoy pure puzzle games where you solve Puzzles and Puzzles only one after another and then after solving it you get a scene or something.

I love puzzles! But not in my porn.
It's like trying to make dinner with your TV, somethings just don't mix.

Make hard puzzles, but also give players the ability to skip after a good few misses. I would say like, 15. That way, players don't just instantly skip puzzles by failing over and over, but if they're legitimately stuck, and don't know the solution, they then are surprised by a skip button. Maybe 15 is a bit much lol, but I it should be a bigger number than like, 3 or so, cause then players wouldn't have any incentive to keep at it to solve the puzzles, and the satisfaction from beating a tough puzzle is lost.

I really don't like puzzles and minigames. I find them frustrating and annoying. Nothing's going to make me delete a game faster than finding it chock full of puzzles that block progress. I've actually gone into the code on some renpy games to add bypasses to some of the puzzles when I was playing them. You know you really dislike a puzzle when you spend more time coding a workaround than actually trying to solve it...

I think it depends on the genre of the game. In an exploration style game where you can not fight enemies then puzzles are expected. In a game like DOOM putting a puzzle level in the game would kill the rush of the fast pace action and might get the player frustrated.

My a advice is to poll your more loyal fans about what type of game they like and only put puzzle levels in your next game if it makes sense for the genre used. If you REALLY want to put in puzzles anyway then you may want to include an answers sheet in a text document along with the game so they can skip those puzzles if they don't like them.

I like puzzles if there's a reward for it. But puzzles just to progress through the game normally feel like a waste of time and effort.
But if the puzzles makes sense in the game thematically(like you're a hacker, trying to hack computers, or a thief cracking a safe, then I think puzzles would be fine.

Yes for puzzles or minigames in general BUT:
  • Must be well done and easy to understand complete. On this the best suggestion that I can give you is "NO! You think that is sufficiently easy, but it's not!"
  • Simple, fast, immediate interface. Too many times the interface transform a potentially nice game into a chore. create an interface that is easy and immediate to use.
  • MAKE A KINKY GAME! Do not make a game that has nothing to do with sex. Instead make a game that has at least some kinky flavor.

So far, according to the votes, I have come to the conclusion that all three options have their own fans, although their numbers are different. But I think in making puzzles for such games, it is better to consider the tastes of all three types of players. It seems to be good to build a combination of hard and easy puzzles in the right places in the game. And that we have to consider an option for skipping the game to take into account the tastes of the pro and second option players.

the most important consideration for me would be whether or not the puzzles make sense with the story.

This too.

And also probably the MOST important thing to consider is the "base mechanic" of the game.
A pure VN with just some choices is not a good environment for puzzles or other minigames. It does not make sense with the flow. It risks to just be a wall the player has to overcome to continue to read the story.
Like reading a book and a certain point you have to do a sudoku to continue reading.

Instead a game that already works with some more mechanics (exploration, stats, non-linear story progression, sandbox) can more easily insert a mini-game without it resulting out of place. Or the mini-game you want to insert should be a core part of the overall experience.
In this case the player was already "playing" a game.

If a game world is interesting enough, I might be up to solve riddles and uncover secrets in order to find out more about it or get more powerful/richer, if they are well done - but not with sex as the end reward. When I'm trying to get in the mood, my brain gets tunnel vision.

I think it depends a lot on what you are going for with the game. Clearly, if it has puzzles, it usually means that you have to use your head - the upper one that is. Games like that are fine too, especially if there's a good story to boot. But not all players like that. Some would much rather move straight to the more "interesting" parts of the game.

To summarize my opinion:
  • If the game has a good and interesting story which the adult content is a part of, but not the main driver of the story, then I'd like it.
  • On the other hand, if the adult content is main driver in the game and the story merely tries to justify various scenes, then I'd probably find the puzzles out of place or annoying obstructions.
