Speaking from my perspective as a dev with a femdom based environment, I felt before I started that my game was going to be niche, so I had low expectations in terms of financial metrics. I even researched the Patreon performance of as many femdom games as I could find out of sheer curiosity, and the truth is that certain genres/styles IMHO have an easier time to generate financial traction. I was okay with that because I just enjoyed the prospect of telling a story I wanted to try. (although to be honest, I had NO CLUE at the time how hard it was to make, haha!)
I originally had another pure femdom/lesdom game that was much more grounded in my real life understandings...(it was going to be a sorority based game which I could write books about to be frank) and a more "mainstream" massive/epic kind of branching choice game with tons of role playing depth, etc. (The closest game I can think of I have seen would be Persona 5) It would have had a femdom element somewhere, but definitely would not be a primary aspect of the game.
Even with my decision for KG, I felt very strongly about having a more well rounded game with a male domination type path to offset the femdom/sub path. Mostly because I felt it would be more fun to write it that way and a better story, but also because I wanted to later throw in a kind of "secret submissive" path later in the story (a normal or dominant guy in day to day life, but quietly submissive to a specific female(s) in bed as a real relationship) and I felt I couldn't do it super well with a completely submissive path 100% so to speak. (or more accurate to say I didn't believe I could write it super well) I consider this third option the most realistic to me for actual day to day life, but I was so worried it was too boring for too many players.
I also make more hardcore femdom stuff in my mind (which to me are primarily pegging and pee, will never put some harder things like scat in there at all) optional for even femdom players, and try to give warnings for "darker" scenes in the choices in game in an attempt to avoid triggering players not wanting to see certain things. The goal is just for people to have fun so you do what you can...I use a minor cheat by sometimes have the female "pick" a punishment with a harsher one often one of the avoidable choices so it maintains the femdom aspect, but still gives the player some agency in avoiding the harsher punishments, etc.
