The original version of Wicked Rouge was fantastic.
An actual game with a solid story, fantastic ambiance, and great management mechanics. It was one of my favorite adult games, with the caveat that if you aren't interested in playing a game then neither version will appeal.
The REFINE version is overall even better, thought there are a few things that were a bit better in the original game.
Good changes:
1) The story is more tightly composed and a lot of the ill-fitting comedic elements have been toned down, which is a big improvement. The new version is simply better constructed and everything is in service of the overall tone and spirit of the story.
2) The visual look has improved. It looked good before, but the new visual look is even better. Some animations get a bit too fast, but that is a minor complaint as overall the visuals are very, very well done.
Bad changes:
1) The management mechanics have been simplified. For instance, the way the stage works is less complicated, and I feel like there are less choices for managers to make. I would prefer more choices, not less. It is still a good management system, but it could be improved with a bit more complexity.
2) The combat system is less complicated. In the previous version units could block for other units, and I feel like the combat was a bit more tactical. Also, there are no longer any choices on units. In the previous version you could hire different guards to work with. That seems to be gone now. I prefer the more complicated system. Also, I feel like the characters level up a bit too fast now, but that may be necessary to complete the missions. I did actually lose one battle, which was a nice surprise, and the balance may require the quick level progression.
Overall review:
Still at the end of the day Wicked Rouge remains an extremely interesting and captivating game.
Every piece is just well done and in service to the overall feel, atmosphere, and setting. Nothing is out of place or superfluous.
It is rare to play an adult game that is so well crafted. And I don't think the porn really matters, as the strength here is the story telling and experience. The porn adds to that as it blends seamlessly into the story, but it isn't the main strength of the game.
I highly recommend Wicked Rouge to anyone that wants to experience playing a young ronin in charge of rebuilding a once glorious pleasure house in a violent and gritty feudal world.
The world building is concise, and near perfect. Everything that happens is fitted within this overall vision so precisely and deftly.
Playing this is an experience that very few adult games ever achieve.
Though there are very few choices outside of management decisions, I would describe Wicked Rouge as a unique adult role playing game.
A very fun and memorable experience.
