Would you rather have a generic MC or someone with deph?

Generic fits me better, but MC customization fits me the best.

The tricky part with detailed characters is they sort of need to be good (in terms of quality, not morality).

On the other hand, a generic blank slate doesn't really have to be anything, because I can impose myself or the role I want to play onto that character, without ever having it act in a way that contradicts my own headcanon.

Edit: Realized that this probably isn't equally true for every game as it is for the specific types of games I enjoy playing, a VN might benefit more from a detailed MC than a sandbox-RPG would.

I bring you my little experience: for "Quantum Loop" I tried to give a strong, however unpleasant personality to my MC, he is a perverted old man locked in a boy's body, so he makes unpleasant comments and behaves reprehensibly with everyone.

But the whole context is grotesque and comical.

(And the idea is that something will have to change in him as well if he wants to resolve the story).

Well, some people love that it's so defined others can't stand that because they "wouldn't do that."

So the more defined he is, in my opinion, the more divisive he can be (for better or worse).

It entirely depends on the story. In the case of meet n' fuck VNs kinda choose your girl games the protagonist doesn't matter, it's just a dick with hands, because the focus is on the girls that you fuck. In the case of more character-centered games about say corruption, prostitution, where you play as a girl getting slammed, or a guy being dommed, having MC well-developed adds to the enjoyment.

This is my first time posting here so hello everyone! ^^

I was wondering if people would prefer a game where the MC is generic, because some people might think it is more relatable, than having a full pfledged character.
I don't mean to say that generics MCs are better than the ones with depth but I am wondering if it is a turn off, when some character has some motivations, that might turn people off
(I don't mean fetishes like rape or ntr)

If you have a stroke while reading this then it's not my problem :)
Mc's having a brain and personality is always a plus in comparison to a guy who is just a dick on legs. Look i get it we are talking about games where the whole point is to fuck but if the main character as well as the characters he is interacting with (mainly the ones he's gonna sex up) are basic and generic then I (we) could just watch animations, porn, or pictures because thats pretty much what a generic "i wanna fuck every pussy and thats all i care about" mc is.

I do prefer a generic MC as it does allow me to self insert. But a strong personality that gets me invested in the character’s drive, passion or viewpoint is a major plus. But I feel like this is something only a strong writer could accomplish.

I have rock-solid standards so i'm generally not interested in generic anything.
Thing is, something non-generic is actually hard to produce since it requires effort, imagination, creativity, skills...
And since many devs are just hobbyists, scammers, or just average lazy bastards looking to hit a gold mine with their dumbass 'get-rich-quick' schemes who never take anything seriously, we naturally mostly get generic stuff thrown at the market.
And so, the market gets saturated in that generic slop which in turn erodes consumer standards and becomes the new meta for which people, hilariously enough, even pay.:coffee:

I rather a more complex MC, with interests and activities that go beyond "whose hole I'll fill today?" (it becomes "which hole of mine will be filled today?" for female MCs). But this kind of MC also asks for deeper story and character interaction.
