Generic fits me better, but MC customization fits me the best.
The tricky part with detailed characters is they sort of need to be good (in terms of quality, not morality).
On the other hand, a generic blank slate doesn't really have to be anything, because I can impose myself or the role I want to play onto that character, without ever having it act in a way that contradicts my own headcanon.
Edit: Realized that this probably isn't equally true for every game as it is for the specific types of games I enjoy playing, a VN might benefit more from a detailed MC than a sandbox-RPG would.
