Why is the MC written to be an asshole? He doesn't seem to want to have fun and spends more time working than he does with his wife, it's like he's trying to push her away by being a jerk, even when I'm trying to do the NTS route so I'm doing love and lust choices Matthew still comes across as a cunt, tells Ashley to delete a hot pic of them from years ago because "he's not that guy anymore". How are you supposed to like this guy at all?

Friends, the fact that you consider Matthew a complete idiot - that was my task. This is a game about a nerd who Stepping Over Oneself to save his marriage.

The fact that he seems like an asshole to you... It doesn't seem that way to you, that's how it was intended.

And I can't stand those peaople who have to tell us each and every time. Just go away and look somewhere else, mate!
I feel the same. It’s frustrating to open a thread expecting discussion about the game, only to find someone who clearly doesn’t like the genre or hasn’t even played it, whining just to stir things up. That’s not sharing an opinion — that’s just being toxic.

I can't stand those people that tell other people they can't voice their opinion, mate!
So I can voice my opinion about you and you will be okay with it, no matter what?
The fact that you are allowed to voice an opinion does not mean you HAVE to. Nobody needs to know all you folks don't like something, this statement has simply no value for anyone and is just disturbing. I'm so tired of all that whining about NTR, phone games, AI graphics and whatever. Nobody forces you to open a thread like this.

Overview:
Stepping Over Oneself is a visual novel about love, memory, and emotionally complex choices. You play as Matthew, a programmer preparing to marry his fiancée, Ashley. Told in the style of a modern messenger, the story unfolds through photos, texts, inner thoughts, and layered conversations. The past begins to surface—ex-lovers, old friends, and unresolved feelings collide with the couple’s future. Your decisions shape the emotional dynamics: balancing logic, passion, and loyalty. Can true love survive when you know someone too well? Is intimacy itself a test? Multiple narrative paths reflect different player temperaments—from grounded commitment to romantic obsession. The tone is realistic, heartfelt, with touches of humor, light drama, and the emotional vibe of millennial relationships.

If the player feels like Meth is a total asshole, then I've done my job really well. I'll repeat what I wrote above, my job is to show that meth is an asshole and if he wants to save his marriage, he needs to change and Stepping Over OneselfIf

It feels like the default for the game is to push Ashley away and have her cheat because even doing the nice stuff Matthew always ends up fucking things up like missing anniversaries. And so far I'm not seeing anything about Matt wanting Ashley to do naughty stuff with other guys, granted I'm not at the end of the update yet but he hasn't even thought it yet. But you definitely have done a brilliant job if him being an indifferent jerk is how you wanted to write him:)

Can anyone give spoilers for episode 3? Which scenes are there? Did you like the new episode?

Explain to me (this is my argument), how you figure a phone sized game/picture is better than a full sized screen on a computer? Riddle me that, Batman. Somebody show put it to a vote, for all players to see what they prefer.

***It has been a couple of months since I made the above post, and I have seen more and more games cumming out "phone style", I don't like it any better, but, I am getting used to the idea. I still think a full picture is much better than a phone size, but I am getting used to it. Can't make it go away, so just got to roll with the flow.

Well, that would be a lot easier if these things weren't shoved into our feeds w/o indication. I'd argue these shouldn't even be considered visual novels. They're novella's with the rare picture.

Every single one of these devs is putting together the exact same puzzle with the exact same pieces, just slightly differently. Every single one of the relationships in these games should be promptly ended. The characters in each game might look different, but they all have the same, identical role and behaviors. They've taken something inspired by choose your own adventure novels, transitioned it to a visual format. That way you have less text-based context, and it's quickly translated visually. These phone games then remove the last remnants of context, go back to being fully text-based, and what we're left with is two characters seemingly gaslighting each other while both parties friends insert themselves into the problem. The MC is being told he doesn't care, while you are actively choosing every decision to show you care. So, excuse me when 5min in I'm choosing every option that shows how apathetic I've become before the story ends with just another argument.

People would be infinitely more accepting of these games if they weren't all the same generic bs. There's a reason why the hundreds upon hundreds of these games all only have a handful of supporters. Once you've seen one, you've literally seen them all. It would be like if every "traditional" VN was about a college kid hooking up with a drunk chick at a party and promptly ended before the sex scene. That's how generic, lazy and boring these phone games are. We're not hating on these games bc it's AI, nor bc of it being a phone game, but bc it's the same regurgitated, generic slop.

You speak like these are all made by the same person lol. I have criticisms for how its done but not for its mere existence, the phone format suites the medium imo, since its text and not voice. I feel more immersion than traditional VN tbh when its done right. This one is a bit boring and doesn't do the flavour of NTR I like but yeah, crying on a forum isn't going to stop people from making what they want, especially a pirate board, most of us are not making these games so you're yelling at the clouds.

Guys that come out with such negativity, what did the dev do to all of you? He's just trying to see that his vision is adapted to a game. Regardless of genre, he shouldn't be the victim of such negativity.

Just click away, and move on. Learn to be disappointed and not complain about it every time, it's stressful to bait yourself into arguing all the time.

Ugh another game where you need to be a distant jerk to get NTR, whole point of NTR for me is betrayal, not much betrayal if you push them away like that. Prefer when it comes from being loving and devoted but cowardly and indecisive.
Yeah I partially agree with you. It's a common "trope" to write that way because it's easiest to think of. There are a lot of other creative ways to write NTR.

something is not told right here. In reality you'll not play a young couple, but 5 years after your marriage. So you'll have to cope to keep your wife who's bored with you. As the pacing is very very slow, you must enjoy the "She's bored with me because I'm a nerd, and I know the relation is fucked" trope. Maybe when something is broke, it's just too late. As the game is very tedious about this "repair" thing, it's not so exciting.
