For real, I don't have any idea what the "sub action button" is for the introduction lockpicking, and if I'm already failing that, it's not a good omen.

Sub action button is the shift. Would have been nice to know before losing my lock picks

The game doesn't use levels in any way, so neither the number nor level mean anything. It's just there as all Wolf RPG games show it even if it's not used unless the dev hides it in some way.

Tried using save editor and it didn't work, weird that it didn't since it supports wolf rpg.

That site was never updated for the newer Wolf games. MTool does work for it but you can't use any saves you had for the game.
