The biggest reason why it looks odd is because the scene does not match a real-world setup that is likely to create such "ray" artifacts. The light is too uniform and too bright. Individual rays are more likely to "appear" in a shadowed environment rather than a brightly lit field. And the likelihood is increased if there is some small zone whereby a relatively intense light breaks through into the darkness. The "ray" shows up because more light is shining through that space then its immediate neighbor.

It would work better if she were deeper in the forest. All the trees create a solid canopy and shadow everything. But then there is a solitary fallen tree lying nearby and creating a break in the canopy through which the sun can shine. She happens to lie down in this small sun spot in the middle of a field of shadow and the god rays appear.

Go to google images and type "crepuscular rays" and look at the various images that show up. You'll notice a trend that they are all "mostly blocked" light that has some gaps to shine through.

Nah, it just looks like the rays are in the background because they only are obvious where the image has shadows. The spots I circled are the most obvious spots that show the rays are in front of Sophia, although there are other spots the rays can be seen on her as well. She's simply in too bright an area for the rays to stand out much.

But yes, if she were moved deeper into the image, like back underneath that shade tree, then she could appear to be more "in the rays."

It's basically like shining a flashlight. Do so outside on a sunny day and you can't even tell if the flashlight is on or off. Go into a relatively dark area and suddenly you see a distinct beam of light. There needs to be contrast. And light shining within light isn't very effective.

I personally don't think that "GodRays" was a good choice for this picture,maybe in the forest where the lights stream through the tress or indoors would of been better.I also think that maybe the "GodRays"could of been lighter and not so thick.
Nice use of DOF but maybe put more of a shadow on Sophia right side and looking at the camera,nice work and I look forward to seeing more of your work
This is just my opinion as I am not trying to rubbish your work but PS may of helped you with this render
