4chan has been hacked, and the situation is insane

4chan is currently down. The landing page and all boards are inaccessible. The has some more info, but no official statement has been made as of yet.

In short: 4chan has been brought down by /qa/ exiles as revenge for their board being closed down a while ago.

The insane part: all janitors (mods) have been doxxed, with their personal info and internal messages being leaked, along with the source code of the whole site, with some people even saying that the code is incredibly outdated and messy, which made it vulnerable to this attack.

Discuss. But don't link directly to any leaked info about people, that may be against site rules.

You should only link to a wayback / archive.is mirror of a hacked site. Are the feds to blame somewhat since they supposedly were the jannies until they ruined the site?

4chan was never very profitable and its owned by some random jap company. Website design and security being shit is not surprising.
Sucks for the mods who have to deal with some schizos harassment but fundamentally the fallout is gonna be minor and all that happens is the site does minor fix to prevent access to the hacker and people quit using the now public email accs.

I'm convinced you can look at the problems with today's social discourse and find their roots stemming from 4chan.

Was suspicious the Day, they added Registration and location tracking to that board 20 years ago.
This was only a matter of Time.

So the Soyjack party crowd is behind this? That's like 4chan eating itself then.

Rip a part of internet history, if it never gets back on, the 4channers will simply migrate into somewhere else…
I’ll miss those greentext memes

Email address have been leaked, but so far there's nothing that point to them being legit, nor, to be fair, is there's something pointing to the opposite. Everything else, particularly the persona information, is said as being pure bullshit by anyone who actually looked at the data.

[...] with some people even saying that the code is incredibly outdated and messy, which made it vulnerable to this attack.
Well, I'm still wondering how Moot achieved to sell it, but it was clear from the starts that it was more to not let a part of internet history die, than to actually keep it alive. So, it's not surprising that the code have never been updated.

In a nutshell. The irony there is deep and layered.

Some are speculating that there's no way to recover from this one.

There are a lot of rumors flying around, one way or the other, so take everything with a grain of salt.

I mean, they can always go and set up a brand new imageboard, preferably one with better software than an spaghetti codebase running on a severely outdated PHP version. It's not like this relic of a website was the only imageboard/textboard around the internet or something, there are thousands of these out there (and with far better programming and security management too).

Are you fucking kidding? You're the one who claim that janitors have been doxxed, and you answer me this when I moderate your claim?

I assumed the new owner was going to try to get the site to implode himself. It was really just a shell of itself. Imageboards are still alive and well. They make a lot of sense in the face of soulless social media. Even if you look at the "homepage of the Internet", ungodly UI changes are unleashed on the public. The volume slider is programmed badly. By comparison, even this forum is frozen in time design-wise, but it works, so that's probably why they don't change it. Without getting into politics, the big social media creators are generally becoming more evil. So, really, it's obvious that the original 4chan wasn't even trying to compete, despite having some shine left, and they never even patched any of their software.

There are a lot of archives of 4chan threads around the web (like , , , there's even a of sorts), it's not like the site's content will be lost to time or anything.

I use, tbf used, /co/ for comics and sometimes the anime boards...the rest of the site is barely for shitpost and too ruined by people that are legit mentally ill or nazis who are also mentally ill.
I have no idea why someone would ever put their email or register on the site...

Nah even if it was completely archived, there won’t be any more new storms coming from there. I know for sure the most notorious moments and countless memes have been saved, but it’s like walking in a library of a lost community, a chaotic controversial and fucked up one.
