It's not supposed to be all black and white, they are swimming in a lot of grey areas and what they are doing is a very extreme from of sexual practice, naturally this will come with some serious life-altering consequences for better or worse. It's up to you I guess to make that judgement. It all depends on what you want to see happen in this fantasy world.
