Yes, I know that this is a somewhat off comparison, but HS is just a tool. It doesn't write you a story, it doesn't create characters, it doesn't write a program.

The legality of using Honey Select for such games is murky and it is neither clearly legal to do so nor clearly illegal.
Ah, I may not have made that point clearly enough. I meant "characters" as in backstory of the people, the way they act and so forth, not so much the looks part.
My point being that these games aren't just "Honey Select", that's only a part of it. Just staging people in HS doesn't make a game.
100% Illusion Posers are not difficult to use and I prefer them heavily to the 3DCG you usually find, but please don't act like porn plot and Ren'py VNs are massive feats of game development, people play the game because the characters dont look like shit.

Speak for yourself. People have different reasons to play some games and not others. I have dropped many a game with good looking graphics because the plot or the gameplay was shit. Even only because of general writing suckiness.
And what constitutes "massive feats" is debatable anyway. If it were only for the graphics, I would just play Honey Select itself. I could recreate my favorite character and have Rae as a fuckdoll without any of her talk and character - goddamn boring.

I think you're absolutely correct.
A character being written with depth and actually having some "character" is much more important to the story, than how a character appears.
Most people (who are not shallow) fall in love with the person underneath, rather than their surface appearance.
Love at first sight doesn't exist.
Lust at first sight does.

no, it´s actually a really good comparison. You can always create new stuff with something that already exist. games use existing engines, music uses existing patterns and instruments and all that. if anything, it´s what you do with those tools that makes the difference. HS is usually a bland masturbation box, yet people can create stories with it.
HS engine or not, creating this is damn hard.
