To be fair a good 60% of patrons outright forget they're giving anything money because it takes so long for anything to get done. In the process of waiting for an update they forget about a thing ever existing and just don't check anymore, letting the money get drained out of their bank accounts because no one really checks those that often. Why risk a new venture when you can keep milking the same cash cow and have people keep willingly throw money at you
But yeah.. Patreon is just too profitable as a scam if you're making games.
All you need is some decent-ish art, to pander to a specific community and validate them in some way.
Legend of Krystal, A Town Uncovered, Summertime Saga, they pander to different communities and make bank on doing nothing for how long they've existed. Since they're fairly simple VNs(with LOK being a bit of a sidescroller) they'd have been done at most a single year since starting up if there was any sort of deadline to adhere to or any overhead to answer to. With no accountability or direction there's no reason or incentive not to continue milking and scamming people.
