It seems to me that this is the author's literary device of "slow burning" intrigue, when at first Sofia says a categorical "No", and then persuades herself to do something: for the sake of the children, for the sake of the family, to pay off a debt, to fulfill the duty of a TEACHER, etc. This device is used by the author quite often (Sophia showed Dylan her boobs in the fitting room, a bikini show, Sam, Dylan in the jacuzzi and many other places.
