Kirito's only saving grace is plot contrivance. He is not strong, he is not powerful. He is weeb gamer who lucked into every single situation. Even in gaming, debatably his singular skill, he is only successful to any degree because the plot demanded it. He is decent if you want a no-thoughts, head-empty self insert to project yourself over. I imagine most people who would do this are also weeb gamers. I do understand the appeal, but from a storytelling perspective, Kirito is an abomination. If someone like Kirito actually went up against any of the people he does in real life, and the plot didn't contrive his victory in absolutely implausible ways, he would have his twink ass kicked so fast and hard he would never recover. These traits make him an inherently unlikable individual, and thus, one that is gladly and eagerly sought out to be cucked by fan works.

Granted, I can only speak for his anime portrayal. I myself have only read the first LN, but with thatin mind at least, unless the quality of the writing improves greatly within the LN series, I would say he is pretty pathetic either way.

Yep. SAO, the anime at least, is very clearly a young teenage power fantasy and a badly written one to boot. Kirito is not likeable, got abilities that are equivalent to hax, and gets girls that he quite frankly doesn't deserve. All of that makes Kirito NTR desirable to people. "SAO is trash" was a meme and popular opinion for years for a reason.

The LN may be better, but the meme of chapter 16.5 still shows that the author was not that great of a writer and turned many people away from ever trying to get deeper into it. That and the fact that the gratuitous rapey stuff is still in the LN, as far as I know.

I'm baffled there are people that like to dissect and nitpick how "bad" a character Kirito is, like that he doesn't have his own character flaws to offset his usual perfection and earned skill-set. I'll admit SAO has some weird stakes that happen, especially in the Underworld War arc, but I think the point is that Kirito's true luck comes in from others helping him in some form or another. That's how MMOs are supposed to be played after all, having friends to back you up against a raid boss.

He is no coward or weeb. When Asuna and his friends were taking hostage in the artificial island The Turtle he was in the thick of it these were trained mercenaries! He was facing the risk of real death yet he did not coward down he fought along side the researchers and guards at The Turtle which they had to deal with real bombs after the Light Cube was stolen!

The anime only got to inside the game and nothing about the danger he faced in real life. Gun Gal the laughing coughing were killing people in real life of the people they killed in the game they had an accomplice that than killed them in real life. No you can't judge him by the anime.

To be fair, they all look bland as shit when you seen enough of them.
The harem protagonist (whether for a Hentai or not) are always the generic high schooler with no discernable trait.
On the other hand, the NTR characters are always the fat bastard, the bully gyaruo, the token black guy foreigner, a bratty shota, a gaggle of faceless thugs, or [insert monster species here].

Well, that's partly because Kirito has only flaws. He has no earned skill set, it is a product of bad writing. His perfection is a by-product of bad writing. His personality is a by-product of bad writing. His "luck" is so grossly unrealistic as to the point of being disengaging. His friendships are unrealistic, stilted, and heavily forced. You could even say they are a product... of bad writing. The world itself isn't that bad, and the various game worlds that SAO explores aren't bad. But Kirito himself has no redeeming qualities, and you can't tell me otherwise.

But this only makes him less of a believable, or more importantly, relatable character. Fiction doesn't have to be believable, but your believability has to match your setting. And guess what, it doesn't. Kirito exists in a world that abides by rules that mirrors pretty closely that of reality. And despite that, Kirito has the world bend around him to put him in situations that actively disengage a thinking audience. No one, ever, under any circumstances, would be able to accomplish what Kirito has done. Combine that with an incredibly surface level personality, surrounded by surface-level relationships, and you have a character with no depth, no relatability, and no real stakes. You know, a poorly written character.

Firefighters, Police, Nurses, Doctors, and many others even an old lady to save her son lifted car enough for her son to get out when jack collapsed on him! What he has done is believable in the setting where there is VR games that immerse you in them and technology that created the Underworld.

Conflating instances of heroic happenstance of isolated real events to the continual and incessant contrivance of Kirito's life situations is a strange cope, but you do you.

Also, just pointing at Akihito as the cause of those said situations is literally just a Deus Ex Machina situation, and weakens your own case. Being able to hand-wave all of it as the outside influence of a higher power that resides off screen with no payoff on its own is one of the pillars of lazy/incompetent writing.

That all said, I'm gonna bail on this conversation. I'm not going to convince you, clearly, and I'm only going to look more like an ass by running in circles like this. I do, believe it or not, enjoy SAO. Just that I understand that Kirito's character writing is a sad joke.

I can! Especially as someone who has read all the Light Novels! Nobody would fuck with him because he is dangerous! He has defeated every bad guy even in the real world and not just SAO!
