It all depends on whether you believe that what is on your computer is useful to your family after your death (which is not porn then). If this is the case, I would tell you to take an external hard drive or a cloud or any other system that allows you to separate the part useful to your family from the rest. And block access (password etc...) to the part you want to hide.

If they don't need anything on your computer ... just use a good password to access your computer.

And as indicated above, schedule a regular restart otherwise it is useless.

Unless its criminal or extremely messed up i wouldnt really bother, since you say visual novels it cant really be that bad anyways so you have the option to just leave it as it is. But if you really wanted to make sure no family member has it there needs to be a few requirements like making sure the laptop/pc is yours and therefore youd be able to change the passwords so nobody can access it ever or encrypt certain folders
i myself have quite alot of porn on my devices but i know nobody would ever see it due to the security ive added to make sure

Anyway, since this is the Internet I can afford to say the hard truth: they don't care. Your porn means nothing to them, they may be impressed of quantity of it, but that is all. One of my co-worker's grandad died and from his leftovers they found porn videos with labels "very good". Guess what, no-one cared. It is only you because porn is part of your core, that will never give anything meaningful to you. After you die and they will found out the porn, they may say something along the lines: "that explains a lot" and move forward.

I bet you don't have a data limit on your internet service, or it's very generous with the limit that you can just watch whatever you want whenever you want. It's 2021 but greedy ISP's have not gone away. It's also easier to have a hoarded collection of things you know you like instead of trying to find it again online. I don't want a million bookmarks and i don't want to make accounts on those sites to maintain a list of favorites.

Also, is encryption actually safe? Like if i took your Windows drive with the so-called encrypted folder, and plugged it into my Linux computer, is that going to stop me from seeing what you have? The fact that it's encrypted is going to make me even more curious because i know you're hiding something. Of course with the context of this thread we are assuming it's porn, but in practice whoever is looking through your drive doesn't know it's porn unless you explicitly labeled the folder that way. For all i know it could be some clues to a secret family treasure i'm meant to find.

If my dad has a digital porn collection, i don't want to know about it. I know it's hypocritical but my memory of him would be tainted because i don't have that perception of him at all. I also don't think i could keep that information to myself.

While I obviously don't do it openly, I never hidden that I play adult/porn games. My children (both adults) even know that I made mod for them and plane to write at least one of those game when I'll finally found the time for this. But they also know that there's a difference between fantasy and reality.

He will see it, think that grandpa was a little rascal (in a nice way), then delete it without saying a word about it. Secure your files with password access. Your password will die with you. Sorry for being vague but almost any method that complies with password access should be enough. Unless your family is entirely made of tech-savvy people hell-bent on shaming you post-death, I'm honestly not too worry about it.

Outside of tech, maybe you can file a will? Have that will specifically mention "to destroy all personal data"?

Not a single encryption technique is completely prone to data recovery. Physical annihilation ensures that your data is effectively gone but that will not erase 40 years of random porn life of individual #12499 that has been sent back and forth throughout the entire Internet.

What you described is hardly worth going through this process but that's your decision.

Well, do a dead man's switch. Make a simple script that will delete all your folders, history and whatever else you want, every few days you have to input a password so the script won't activate. Make the script run in the computer initialization and be active as a task always. This way if you suddenly die one day, after some time the script will run and even if your computer is off, as soon as it is powered up again the script will run on initialization. I doubt that the first person who finds you will be this tech god to immediately recognize it so they probably won't know what happened to your files. This can all be done with basic programming knowledge, I would personally recommend Python but it's your choice. Test everything in a controlled environment before deploying the real script of course.
