After the Inferno is absolutely worth playing if you like a good story focused game. It's your typical medieval fantasy setting about the leader of a mercenary group who is drawn into a conflict between an aggressive empire and a small kingdom trying to defend from the imperial invaders.
Along the journey the MC will meet several women, most of them have optional side quests and all of them can be potential love interests.
If you are not actively trying to ruin things the good ending is pretty easy to get, just choose the obvious answers. You also need to do all the side quests for the women for the best ending.
After the Inferno has several fully voice acted animated story scenes. These are short, but very impressive with proper lip syncing of the animated characters. The various sex scenes are also fully animated, however, as good as After the Inferno is as a story driven fantasy game, it feels a bit stale when it comes to the romances.
The MC can romance about half a dozen females in this game, however, the sex scenes with them can feel pretty random, without all that much erotic build-up. The sex scenes are also not really interactive, but the animations are fluid and it's ok overall, but they are rather short.
The biggest shortcoming is that almost none of the relationships are fully fleshed out. The childhood friend Cressa comes closest here, she also has the longest side story, but even her romance lacks erotic tension and just plain good old "romance". Much of her plot is about trying to find her a job or helping her with blackmailers. I would have preferred it if the various side plots were more about the romance and the main story was all about the plot.
The character design in this game is a bit odd. For some reason the females all have large anime eyes, I don't think this was a good decision. All the female characters, including elves and a fox girl, are pretty, but the very large eyes look a bit weird, especially since the male characters all have normal eyes. But after a while you can get used to it. Body proportions are normal though, you won't find exaggerated proportions here. Only the MC has a very mild case of horse appendage, not a bad case, a mild case, but it looks a bit off here and there, since it's so thick, the poor women have to endure a lot in this game.
Another thing is that sometimes the game tells you things... but doesn't show them. Especially early on there are several things that are narrated, but there are no corresponding renders for them. The renders themselves are pretty good, but there is a lack of variation here and there, especially during dialogue scenes when renders don't change for quite some time.
Sometimes characters are also superimposed on the background, this happens during several dialogue scenes, I generally prefer it when the characters interact with the environment, are part of it when they talk.
The game has a sandbox, you have an interactive map and you can visit several locations, but you only get meaningful interactions in the one story location that is relevant to the plot. So the sandbox is not really needed all that much.
The side story for Cressa, who, in my opinion, is probably the most important love interest in the game with the most time dedicated to her, also lacks some excitement since a good portion of her plot is about the MC trying to find a job for her. Later, when it's more about Cressa's blackmailer in the army, who forces her to rob people in the city, it picks up speed. But overall, as mentioned before, it lacks romance, good erotic tension and love. The sideplots for all the females are mostly story focused, I am not sure this was the best idea, I feel more romance focused content is needed for the various love interests.
Another thing I was not too fond of is that quite a few love interests have little to do in the main story. For the most part the romances are completely separate from the main story about the invasion. And once you finish a side plot for one of the love interests you cannot really interact with them again, unless they appear in the main story.
It would have been nice if the MC could have visited Cressa for example, to have some quality time with her, maybe reuse some animation here, but for two people who have been in love with each other since childhood it would have been only appropriate to have more interactions between the two.
Each love interest gets two scenes during the main game and then at the end you get one (somewhat silly) sequence where the MC can have sex with all of his love interests one after another (only one LI is missing here, since she's a spirit in the Afterworld).
I think this could have been solved a bit better, since it feels a bit mechanical and once again it lacks proper erotic tension or build-up. It's mostly just a brief chat in the tavern and then the MC will invite the love interest up to his room... cut to the animation , rinse and repeat for all the other love interests.
Also, lots of potential was wasted by not having the female characters interact more with each other, none of the love interests are really aware of the other ones, so childhood sweetheart Cressa doesn't know that the MC is having fun time with about half a dozen other girls. This could have been expanded upon. But After the Inferno puts the focus on the story and certainly not relationship drama.
On the plus side there are no complications, if you just want to enjoy a feel good game (there are some darker moments, but it's mostly wholesome throughout) without relationship drama, then After the Interno will make you happy.
So your enjoyment of After the Inferno will greatly depend on what you want from a game.
If a story focused game with some sex here and there is something you can enjoy then After the Inferone will almost certainly not disappoint. The animated story moments with really good voice acting are something you won't find too often in other VNs and the story, while not entirely original, will keep you reading.
If you want a game with good romances, with tension, build-up and numerous interactions with the love interests, then After the Inferno may disappoint you, since the romance is easily the weakest part here. Sex often feels random, for example the first sex scene with one character in a prison cell felt quite anticlimactic, many scenes lack some tenderness, there is very little kissing in this game (no kissing animations), most scenes jump straight into the sex animation and things end pretty quickly.
But if you are ok with a game that favors story over romance, then After the Inferno is worth it!
And the game also has a proper ending, but leaves things open for a sequel. The good ending is also quite positive and happy, so you end After the Inferno with a warm fuzzy feeling.
So as a story focused game I rate After the Inferno 4 stars. And I cannot emphasize enough how great the animated story moments are.
As a romance game it is merely 2 stars however, things are a bit lackluster here, even though there is lots of variety (humans, elves, a fox girl, even a spirit), but as mentioned, sex is often a bit random, build-up is lacking, erotic tension is almost non existent and there is a lack of interaction with the various characters outside of the side plots.
