All games should have animations

Not going to repeat what has already been said by other people in this thread, but if it can be useful to game authors to hear another dissonant opinion I'd like to mention that I'm the kind of player who doesn't care the *slightest* about animations.

Most of the time, they're (boner-killing) poorly done (because it takes skills and time to get them right) and just defeat the purpose of creating an interesting game within a reasonable frame of time and money. Otherwise said, I'd rather game authors focusing on a compelling and believable story, character development, why not gameplay, and above all actually finishing their games, instead of adding animations.

If people want "animations" so badly, there are always animes and youporn for that.

In a utopia, games would be the way OP described. But since we're aren't living in a utopia yet...

In OP's partial defense, I have come across some games where you clearly see some laziness creep in at certain points in regards to the animation aspects.

I completely disagree. First of all, it depends on the art style how easy it is to make animations. The artist I commission has a very realistic style. Drawing even the slightest variation for an image takes time, imagine needing to make an animation of a few seconds. There are more than enough excellent text-based game with just a few images, or sometimes even none at all. A game with animations is not guaranteed to be great, and a game without animations can be great.

I think in a utopia we would also be seeing massive releases every week/month for our favorite games and a never ending stream of new games that cater to our fetishes. Sadly this will probably never happen given how small the market is and because having more people on a dev team will more likely ruin the game, especially those that have a good story.

Honestly I'd say the fact that not all games have animations is a good thing. It gives us games to play while we wait for the games with animations to update. Granted will give it to OP that top quality games, especially games that have good animations, have raised the bar and made it harder to tolerate anything less.

I mean its understood that if someone or someone and their staff have the tools & resources for capable animating, but then they start sandbagging it that people would notice?
Thats good to keep raising the bar. Or else people will just animate stick figures and try to put them on a patreon page. :p

Some games have animations some games just pictures. Both can be hot. You can't always have the time to animate. Just find some games which has animations and that's all. There are a ton out there

I rather have no animations than bad animations. If a game is going to animate something, might as well do it well.

It feels good to see that only one person liked it and just a few agreed :)

I was planning on adding animations to my game, but since I'm rendering on really bad hardware (CPU only, my GPU went to hell when I more needed it), it would take forever to render animations. I'll stick with good quality renders instead.

I mean, there is a few hot games / VNs not relying on animations (like Dr. PinkCake stories). It's totally fine for me, so why not? ;)
