I'd say so. You don't get into the actual fighting aspect until episode 2, where you'll be introduced to all 6 disciplines and learn all basic fight moves of each (or not if you're lazy). When you get to your first sparring match, it's up to you how to utilize your skills and either try to beat your opponent standing up, on the ground or try the submission system. Since you're just starting out, it can be difficult, but not impossible. You unlock more powerful moves in episode 3, and also have an opportunity to increase your stats.
