If I want to interact with an angry woman I can just go talk to my wife, I don't need to spend my play-time on it. Are the characters as off-putting as their body language suggests, or is the appearance that everyone in the game is angry just coincidental?

That's the thing. I find spitting disgusting. But slathering it on with your tongue and I'm fine. Don't expect an explanation beyond 'that's just how I'm wired'.
