Artemis DevLog - CH5

Happy Monday!

I’ve been dividing my time fairly well this week. The final patch for Chapter 4 should be coming soon. It’s mostly spelling errors, the revised LI backgrounds for DataLeaks, misc UI changes. So I’m not trying to prioritize it over the other things too much. But it’s still high on the list to see done. Only a few more LI backgrounds to complete. There was a bug reported over the weekend and I need to take a closer look at it but I’ll have a solution to include with the patch in case others have to encountered it. It doesn’t seem widespread so, it was hard to really narrow down. Basically it preventing you from starting the game.

Hardware changes. I managed to snag me a 4090, but I’ve been waiting on my adapter from CableMods to come in, which it did. But my motherboard hasn’t come in yet as it got delayed to this week. So hoping I can start building this weekend. My main PC has an AIO loop so, didn’t really want to take it out to test the 4090. But much thanks to you guys it’s a helpful upgrade for Artemis CH5 development. Weather has been nice and cold, about 40F/4C. So I stacked two of the 3090s last night. Temps only spiked to about 80F/25C during renders. Once I get the 4090 build up and running, I’ll stack the other two 3090s. When summer comes around, I’ll probably get a like a portable AC. I did some test renders and 4k rendering went from 1 hour 14 minutes to just 20 minutes. Which is great news because I’ll be rendering at 4k now and downscaling to 1080. Renders will look a lot crisper. For reference, the flashback in CH4 with Kindra, MC and Cassie was done in 4k and downscaled.

I also went shopping for more assets outside the DAZ the store. Someone’s comment on last weeks post made me chuckle about her DJ equipment. And that’s DAZ assets for you, so little to choose from, haha. But fortunately I do have the knowledge to convert 3rd party assets to DAZ and I’ll be doing more of that this chapter. And I’m very thankful to afford some of the high priced 3D models now. We will still see Kindra’s workshop, but as the chapters go on. I want to explore more of Central Pointe City and it’s various hotspots. And of course Kapuletti Industries’ HQ. The new DevLog image is Kindra’s office, from KIHQ.

On the Steam front of things, I submitted the store page for review on Friday. I got the approval email not long ago. All that’s left is coming up with the build to test and some misc things to mark off. But yeah, if all goes well. We’ll see it on Steam between Jan-Feb 2023

Speaking of progress. I’ve been focused on the outline mostly. With how things ended in CH4, there’s a lot to follow up on. Let the waves settle as it were. Story structure is something I go back and forth on. Making sure I hit certain beats, referenced the correct thing with the correct character, catch plot holes. Which one almost slipped by writing chapter 5 I’ll admit. Part of me wants to make this a somewhat short chapter, only because I would hate to overscope thinking I’m full time now and bite off much more than I can chew. Then trap myself in another 9 month cycle. The events are planned out for each book, getting there is a bit organic. Sometimes I get an idea and decide, this direction is better or that. For example, “Dear Mom” Chapter 2 had a whole different ending planned. All that said I’m about 8 scenes blocked out. Chapter 3 was about 20 and chapter 4 was about 28 I believe. I’m going to review the scenes done so far and see if any fat needs to be cut or if they can be merged.

That about wraps it up. Goal this week is to take a big chunk out of the outline and start writing scenes out and storyboarding.

I completely agree with everything you said in this post. The MC hasn't really been given a chance to interact socially with Artemis, so that could be the explanation of why she was left out of the poll.

You would think, though, that we would have at least been given a chance to vote for Cass Vulvamort! I wonder how many people might have voted for her.

I specifically did not mention "she who shall not be named" for good reason. I have only one vote/wish for her and that is to make the daydream sequence where she is thrown out of the window of her high rise apartment to her swift and violent death a reality or a similar suitable fate. That bitch has to die or go to prison for a very long time or both... yes, I'd honestly prefer both for her... raped and beaten to death in prison sounds about right. She is not only a criminal, she has absolutely zero redeeming qualities resembling a human being. She is nothing more than a predatory parasite. But, I get your point... There are some rather sick, twisted individuals out there who would opt for her abuse in exchange for sex, more's the pity. Personally, I'd prefer some shotgun justice on that bitch. Double aught buckshot can remove a big problem in a hurry. When I see Cassandra in game that is ALL I see, a giant problem that needs to be removed. I was relieved that she was excluded from the vote.

Kinda regret sleeping on this one now. Not a huge fan of DAZ models cause they really mess with my uncanny valley reflex but managed to get used to it. Very good cast and a rare attractive main character.

I assume that most players read the developer diaries and are aware of this topic. I appeal primarily to those players who have replayed version 0.4.1 from the start of chapter 1.

I have a simple question - is there any music in version 0.4.1 in the first three chapters, written by a new composer with whom digi.B is working, or there is no music (neither old "forbidden", nor new)? With the release of chapter 4, I would like to refresh my memories and replay the previous chapters again, but I cherish the musical atmosphere that was present in the 0.3.2. version and which I fear may not be present in v0.4.1 (in the first three chapters). Thanks.

There's a bit of replacement music, there's some temp music, and there's some silent bits where he didn't want to try and fit in anything that didn't sound right to him. He's currently working with an artist to record music to his preferences for at least all the holes and temps left, plus chap 5. I'm can't recall if digi said if the plan is to replace all the music eventually or not.

Thank you for your quick and detailed reply. Well, it's a good thing I still have the archive with 0.3.2 I guess I'll replay it first. As for replacing all the music, if memory serves me correctly, in one of his devlog digi.B wrote that over time all the music will be replaced with his own, the rights to which will belong to him.

As a retired professional musician, I know music and I love this game. I would be happy to aid him in that endeavor by finding good potential royalty free music that he can use without any legal worries. I am doing that for another amazing dev's new title at present and would be happy to assist Digi B. as well.

As a retired professional musician, I know music and I love this game. However, Digi B. had used copywritten music without permission and that is illegal. So, I hope that ALL of that musical content has been removed now. All of the music used in games or other media must fall into one of two categories; copywritten music that is used by permission with any/all applicable fees paid OR royalty free music that holds no copywrite and is free to use for everyone in any media they please, just credit the creator of the music.

I am confident that Digi B. has made the switch to royalty free music now to avoid further difficulties going forward. Most first time devs make mistakes. I just hope this one did not discourage Digi B. and we will all see the successful completion of this much beloved title. You will still hear music and sound FX throughout the game. However, I don't think Digi has had the opportunity to replace all of the music he had to remove. So, there are some spots that did have audio that do not have any at present. I, for one, would prefer that Digi B. move forward rather than take possibly a month or more to find and replace all of the former music tracks, it could only take a week or less... just depends on how quickly the replacement music could be found. Implementing the files is a fairly simple, straightforward process as I have been told. Finding suitable royalty free music that matches the mood of a scene is what can be challenging. He can always do that after completing the game. I would be happy to aid him in that endeavor by finding good potential royalty free music that he can use without any legal worries. I am doing that for another amazing dev's new title at present and would be happy to assist Digi B. as well.

Sounds like I misunderstood. Wasn't accusing anyone of anything anyway. Don't take it that way. I read the disclaimer and it's typical legalese jargon that really means, "we reserve the right to fuck with you if we don't like how you use our music." It's utter bullshit because only they can decide what is improper. I fucking HATE lawyers. They fuck up everything.

I did not followed this music kerfufle closely but I believe you did summarized it nicely in your post(s) which are in line to what I had read. If I may add, this music fiasco was not an isolated case and did not (start with or) only disrupt digi.B workflows and rythms, but also caused difficulties to other (adult games) game developers as well, especially DriftyGames (Leap of Faith) who was the dev that informed digi.B about it in the first place.
