You can try and change it in the settings to the other type then back and see if that fixes it for you.

It never was abandoned. That's just F95 and its policy how to handle games who don't get updates for some time. The dev wrote on Subscribestar that he needs some time to finish things.

Yes that is the problem, you must shower with her each step of the way to get all scenes.
Just like a lot of games/VN you lose out on content using completed saves for updates.

To continue with the sister plot it tells me to "ask Karl about new book", but every time I talk to him, whether it's in his bedroom, at his job or at the bar, there's no dialogue option about the book. What do I need to do?

Yes just talk to the lizard lady to the left once you get there, click on doorway on the left had side just before the workshop area.
Usually when you need to talk to Karl, you do it early mornings on weekdays. The time you normally make breakfast.

You have to go buy the latest book from Spike (Lizard) and give it to the sister, the next day go to sleep with her and press "Act", after doing so go talk to Karl in the morning at his house, the last book you always have to get it from Spike
