Massive changes to variables were made a few versions ago. If you have a save from the moment MC is sleeping or right after he wakes up, the save should work. Saves made at other times have a high probability of not working if made before the version with the changes.

You can try using the back button a few times until something appears on the screen and continue from there. But there is no guarantee that this will work with all saves. It will depend on whether within the 5 possible uses of the back button, there will be a passage change.

If you know how to edit your variables, you can set the $passage variable to 0. This will probably solve the problem as well.
