I'm no leaning towards the death of a child or husband. Someone suggested a while back that it might be a possibility. She has some kids books at home, she seems to want her husband to come back having forgiven him. That suggests he is alive (although this could be part of her being fucked up). I think it's possible the kid died in a way the father was responsible for.
Sex scenes aside (it's a porn game after all), the three paths provide perspective on characters.
Sage's path gives an insight into The HOTs's daily living. Their rules, the way Sage delegates to Quinn, their dynamics. We get more backstory for Sage and Riona. Quinn's troubled crush for the MC becomes more evident. We see how much Ashley is uncomfortable with HOTs' standards unlike Lily. We can observe the way Sarah and Melanie treat their respective daughters...
Bella's path is totally focused on her. If you don't choose her path, she has no screen time in the episode, except the library scene with Josy and Jill.
Derek's path is maybe the least interesting, but it gives you the opportunity to bond more with Derek, Rusty and even Tommy. We also discover why the MC was naked after the crazy night in the strip club
So it's better to play the three paths to get the bigger picture.

It's a key part of the "game" element of this game. Lots of the images are quite good and worth getting, especially if you are a completionist like me.
Same here. Sides even if it isn't you're preferred route there are bits and pieces of the story scattered all over. So I find I learn more about who, what, where and why by doing all of them.

People's obsession with them is beyond me, yeah. But I must admit that their presence makes my favorite free-roams parts a bit more exciting explore wise. Plus there're heavily overlapping across branches so you can unlock majority of them either way.
Sure, I get that, it's like with achievements, no matter how retarded design they might have. But I prefer when achievements are encouraging some different approach to a game (highest difficulty, certain conditions - something challenging instead of do 100 of this or 100 of that). But even we're talking about "find all the secrets" kind of stuff - spotting these things here is not hard at all. And given the game's nature (it's just a VN we're talking about) it offers too little to me. Like I said, the fact that I do exploring with a bit more thouroughness is nice enough but renders themselves? Without the context they're worthless to me.
I like exploring even on the "bad" paths or -RP ones. Even the fails are occasionally hilarious and since we got a bit till the next update gives me something to do. Or they open up my state and I can go back to my regularly scheduled summer shit.
But not all renders are actual scenes, right? Like there's no scene with Bella and Jill and MC, it's just a picture?

My guess is that James had an affair, Bella finds out, they argue and he leaves. She probably blames herself and that's the reason she tries to remain loyal even though he's long gone.

No, those are still about her actions. What i'm saying is that it all happened after James left for something that Bella has forgiven him. So she's trying to remain loyal, but there are clearly times when she's failing. It has been 3 years after all.
