For example it could be he is MIA and they had a big fight before he shipped out. She ‘knows‘ he’s dead but can’t accept it. She wants him to come home as she has forgiven him but she knows he can’t. The room holds his uniform, and perhaps his flag etc.

Other theories have him responsible for for the death of her parents or possibly their child.
