The required branching mechanics have been in place since at least the Preps party with tasks being mandatory if you were on a certain path but optional if not on that path. For example if you're on the throuple path at that party then it's mandatory to speak to them and get them champagne, but if not on their path then you have the option to speak to them but they won't ask you for champagne, or you can ignore them until Maya tells you that Josy's Dad has arrived. It's a conscious choice from DPC to make Fuckface catching Matthew and Olivia canon.
