Honestly, didn't even bother reading the changelog other than the news of their current condition. I don't have a profile on either of those sites for them to directly see this but I wish them great luck on what they are going through and for them to take as much time as they need for their game.

I forgot to answer. They should work but it depends on how old are these. I don't remember exactly when I made the save game retro-compatible, so, the only way to find out is trying~

In the configuration menu you can change the sprites and use the old ones, (Same for interactions) I might add an option to change Rei or Evan sprites individually~

Nah, it's more like a matter of overall graphical style. New sprites in general feel too much detailed in regards to the basic visuals, therefore separating Rei/Evan sprites will make the visual impression even more inconsistent. It's better to leave the general option between old/new graphical style as a whole, while trying to maintain consistency within a particular graphics revision.
I'd recommend to take a step further and rework/improve backgrounds to the standard of "new sprites" instead, regarding the respective option, but that would obviously require extra effort from the graphical design side.

The option will be added because it has been requested, is just an option, so, is upon each player if they choose it.
The backgrounds are being remade, this will arrive with the last beta, this will include a final revision for all dialogues, (Doing this right now) the reworked backgrounds, the refined ending and all the CGs for events~
