ButtKnight is a simple shoot-em-up. You play through levels and upon finishing a level with a certain score you get H-scenes.
Gameplay:
Typical scrolling shoot-em-up gameplay with a few gimmicks. You have your basic gun attack, a charged attack which clears projectiles, and a bomb that clears the screen of projectiles.
Certain enemies drop power-ups allowing you to change and improve your main attack or giving you more "health" and lives.
You start off with 2HP, up to 3 with a power-up. You can also get more lives, defaulting to 2hp each.
There are 4 different weapons in the game: sword, arrow, javelin, and kunai. Each weapon deals different damage, has a different spread, different rate-of-fire, and affects your movement speed.
The game is world based. Each world, when finished with a certain score, gets you lewds. Killing more enemies, killing quickly, not getting hit, not using bombs, and having spare lives gives you more points.
Something the game doesn't tell you is that the charged attack has a secret mechanic: if you let go at the perfect time, the blade comes out yellow instead of blue and does more damage. This also makes a distinct "schwing" sound.
This is insanely satisfying to hit and is part of the reason I really like the gameplay. From what I can tell, the timing is fairly tight. You can definitely get good at it though.
There are three difficulties: Easy, Normal, and Hard. Higher difficulty means less lives for you and more health for enemies.
It also means more points, although you can probably get all the lewds even on easy, so I recommend doing that if you just wanna go through it.
From what I can tell, higher difficulty doesn't have any content you can't get on the lower ones, whether in lewds or in new attacks.
Overall a straightforward shoot-em-up experience. No complaints.
Outside of combat you have a camp where you can talk to the girls you've collected and view a gallery for the lewds.
The talks rotate from a few set conversations, which is a shame since the camp feels so half-baked. Still, I appreciate the gallery.
Story:
Practically nonexistent. You're tasked by the king to go save his daughters from demons, and on the way you collect some more girls of your own.
MC looks old and has a butt chin which tells you about the tone of the game. Don't take it too seriously. If you don't like his face, most lewds have his face covered.
Lewds:
Lewds aren't animated, and some scenes are voice acted.
There are a total of 9 big scenes (1 scene for 6 ladies and Best Girl has 3 scenes) and 6 smaller scenes for random girls you see around.
Art is great if you like vanilla and women being lewd even to people that aren't you. I love the art style. It has a soft, cute aesthetic to it.
Tips for tryhards:
I played the entire game on hard. Here's some tips:
- Like all shoot-em-ups, focusing on keeping yourself alive over dealing damage will get you pretty far.
- Abuse your charged attack, its insanely good. It instakills most enemies over a fairly large aoe and destroys projectiles, so sometimes I'd just not dodge at all and just slice the attacks away.
- Every boss has a window between attacks where you can approach and hit a charged attack. Practice your perfect charged attack, find that window, and let loose.
- I liked the arrows and the kunai the most for weapon choice. I found javelin the clunkiest, but I still found use out of it (I preferred it for the snake charmer boss fight). If you're really struggling, try the kunai, I think you move at full speed even while attacking.
Overall I found the game pretty fun, and the lewds are an extremely good bonus. Definitely worth a try!
