I did some work in TOTDC 2 already (probably enough for a demo, but I'd prefer if I could show off all the major mechanics, and a few more scenes), but I am worried about the transition between the two projects as well. It does have to happen eventually, though, and maybe I can buy myself some extra time by tackling some secondary stuff for Caliross when the main focus shifts to TOTDC 2.
Why?

I know many years have passed, but do you think the TOTDC 1 audience has moved on and stopped following you?:coffee:.
Was your Patreon the same account back then?

I'd also be a bit worried if it were an entirely new third game, but revisiting the roots just makes me smile :D.

I can answer this one: Tales of the Drunken Cowboy predates Patreon. (The service, not mdqp's account: the first release of TotDC over at the was in 2011, while Patreon opened in 2013.)

Well, there are a number of worries:

1) Making a sequel that isn't a complete turn off for potential new players is probably tougher than making a brand-new experience. I do make a living through this, so if things go really wrong I might have to make TOTDC 2 into a secondary project (I do think it's a solid game idea, so I am not too worried, but it's something to think about);

2) It's a new engine (Ren'py), and while I have had my time to practice with it, it's still hard to gauge how much a new feature can take to develop. Other related worries are an increase in art requirements (all backgrounds and characters must be commissioned), worries if the UI is good enough to accomodate the gameplay I have in mind and so on.

3) I worry about the timing. Ideally I'd just take a month or two to finish the demo and polish it up, but would people stick around if I had to take some time without releases? I'd prefer to have everything ready as soon as Caliross is over, we'll see.

4) General worries when wrapping up a project and presenting a new one to the public. XD

Is the pregnancy content any different nowadays? I remember a few years back when I tried it, the MC would get pregnant and then you'd just go to the doctor to confirm your pregnancy and then you'll just sit at home as time progresses super quickly till birth. Is it still like that?

Well, there are a number of worries:
I know it is your main income, but I think you worry too much. No-one will complain if TOTDC 2 is very different to the first in structure and characters, people will understand if the game is set to appeal to a wider audience. I get you on cost of images, but a lot of the backgrounds can be AI. Layered images or even 2D animated may be the way to go for a lot of the dialogue.

The structure has remained the same (so if you dislike it, there isn't much there for you). There are more activities and scenes compared to the past, so there is stuff to explore while pregnant, but it's not free-roam, as that's way beyond the scope of the game.

At this point, this is only going to happen if there is an update a few years down the line. Right now I am doing my best to wrap things up, so I won't expand current paths significantly as a result.

I am sure some people will be fine, perhaps even most, but entertainment is a delicate beast, I can't run on the assumption people will support me no matter what.

I'd rather not relay on AI, if I can. While I don't have super strong feelings against it, I don't like the overall effect on the market (in the long run this might very well kill good art, if no budding artist can earn a living while they aren't skilled enough, and then AI is left with only AI art to learn from as art becomes unviable for 99.999% of the population) nor the final quality most of the time.

I am using layered images, of course, but you need a LOT of art unless you make a game with a handful of locations and characters. The setting is already established, so I can't cut back on that too much.

I hope you expand on the bad ends, the totdc 1 bad ends were nice, but alot of them didn't go into much detail. Also how would your choices from the first game carry over for who you romance and stuff?
I hope to have extended bad ends, as well as a couple of "Celeste is now enslaved by x faction" like in Caliross, where you keep playing through the game but you are now enslaved, so you don't get the regular "good" ending, and the gameplay is warped around this, but you still can see most of the main quests.

Great game btw, I think it says a lot about the quality of the writing that despite mind control not being one of my fetishes i really enjoyed the game focused on it.
