You cannot make this an excuse. Paypal are payment processors for a number of adult sites, and they are the biggest sticklers of all. I have yet to see a single payment processor reject a credit card or even heard of one that has, unless there is something wrong with the card. There would be no adult sites, because those giant payment processors wouldn't be taking any credit cards, sure they are adult payment processors. Even regular payment processors don't care, and why should they? They take their cut, as does the credit card company what you say makes no sense at all.The problem is that it isn't Patreon making these rules. It's the giant payment processors that handle credit card transactions. Patreon isn't all that big a fish in the corporate world, and they have people they need to appease too.
To have a credit card you need to be at least 18 years old in western countries, and whether you buy online adult content or you go to adult shops, those regular payment processors are all to eager to take your money as if the credit card provider.
This is down entirely to patreon, not the credit card processors. Patreon make their rules and if someone doesn't comply with them, they get shut down, its got nothing to do with credit card processors at all.
As for Patreon having to so call 'appease' anyone is quite irrelevant, because whether you believe they too small a company or not, is neither here nor there. They are big enough a corporate identity that they operate both in the US and have offices in Europe. They really don't have to appease anyone and they don't, they just create draconian rules because that is who they are, in the wrong century.
