There are medium-large development studious with 70 employees that try to claim they are indie because corporate decided it is financially sound for them to do so.
But they are only pretending to be indie.

'Indie' mean 'independent (from investors)' which suit them perfectly fine. Some Raven Software is not indie, since Activison pays their checks and bills.

I noticed the locales folder. There are packs with different languages, as far as I understand. That's what I'm wondering, is it possible to change the language in the game?

There are no translation options, since all text built in into 'executable'. Locales folder does not contain localization, at least in this case.

It seemed like something they would outgrow doing, but now I'm essentially banned from the alchemist shop if I don't want it?! There's studios with hundreds of staff that are indie. I'm not sure what you think the definitions is, but its not actually size based.

And even if it was...there's no definition of indie that a 7 man company that's only existed for 5 or 6 years and has one niche game in early access doesn't fit.

That sounds like a bug you should report on the forums, actually. I can’t think of any situation where you’re forced to have sex with Lyric.
