Now that you mention it, it do screams like a bethesda game.Wanted to comment on this, because from what I recall, I felt differently on these two points in particular- to make sure I wasn't misremembering, I challenged my perception on things, and started a new playthrough than what i usually run (Black Mage)
I chose Warrior, and lo and behold, i can say without a doubt that it plays very differently to Black Mage; One is a tank with Damage over Time, and the other is a multi-damage type cannon with access to a summon. After this I tried Thief, who is the antithesis of the Warrior, as he is all about not being attacked, while also having access to multiple stat debuffs.
As for freedom, I always considered it valid to suggest this game offers quite a bit of freedom on where you can go, or the freedom to do what quest you desire; after the tutorial, if I so please, I can go north into the forest, south into the plains, or east into the cliffs, all with their own set of enemies and quests.
Something like oblivion or skyrim where you still have a main quest but the freedom to just explore and do your own sh- would be amazing and all but since the fact that different storylines have different writers in 'em just throws a wrench on that narrative consistency 'cause it's nothing but inconsistent.
Like I said, be a reasonable person from one scene then your absolute gigatard of a character does a full 180 and act like a total moron to fit another's narrative.
All that freedom went to the dumpster the moment the storylines start. You went from a cliche' goody twoshoes or a cliche edgelord. I love freedom with this level of range.
Let's see, me playing as your cliche' tank getting endurance, and gear to protect myself and get aggro as much as I can as I spam AoE didn't really give me that much of a good experience 'cause I tend to lose all of my hp with buffs btw that leads to the fight being over 'cause these in their infinite wisdom, the Player character reaching 0 HP MUST end the fight with a loss.
Me playing a thief is a bit more bearable that is until you realize that the good weapons pre-Khorminos are mostly f-ing two-handers so I'll get a thief obscure shenanigans then use warrior AoEs and build crits.
Black Mage, working as intended. nukes everywhere, more than 4 companions 'cause bless summons.
Healer, Same as BM.
Charmer: Good luck dying and at the same time, nuke everything that has sentience and then look at your allies laughing at you 'cause golems are your bane of existence.
That's just from MY experience 'cause playing it in story mode is a disservice to their FLAWLESS combat system.
