You'd be surprised seeing how many people aren't good parents, whether that is abuse (like Lucy's mother), wanting to use their child to further their goals (Akatsuki' father/Mr. Gilbert) and in extreme cases even endanger their children to obtain something (Hamilton/Vicky's father who wanted to sell her to debt collectors). And there's the case of Gloria Russel who teaches Brian all the bad lessons, which many parents in real life would do, especially those from better off families.

So seeing many bad parents in Cosy Cafe is not that unrealistic and immersion breaking.

I had noticed this myself before. Some shitty parents is normal and expected. Most parents shitty isn't unexpected. But all of them shitty is a bit extreme and is clearly intentional. It's made a bit less obvious by the great variety in how all these parents are shitty.

I think it serves more than one important purpose:
  • The MC and every single harem member is longing for a cosy home because they had to grow up without one. So they are all consciously working towards this goal. What would be a given for someone with competent parents and coming from an intact home is an important goal for this bunch. (Maybe some will develop destructive behavior that they learned from their parents. But then everybody will see that as a problem and try to solve it.)
  • The MC and every single harem member can fully commit to this new family. Ties to their previous families exist, but are much weaker than the new ties. For instance, nobody will be tempted to bring their old mother into the cafe because it's easier to care for her that way.
  • It is often the dream of people from difficult families to give to their children what they were missing. And very often this fails for the same reasons that their parents failed. Clearly this is a wish fulfillment story where it will actually work. In fact, given that Cosy told us there will be a time jump, I half expect that we are going to see a huge, generally happy family with dozens of children growing up together. (The only reason I am not sure is that this could shift the character of this AVN from adult entertainment to something entirely different.)
PS: It has been pointed out below that some parents are dead instead of shitty. Same effect. And it has been pointed out below that Akane (Akatsuki's mother) is an exception. I totally agree! Akatsuki seems to come from a cosy home thanks to her mother and big sister (goofy as that one is, she is still protective about Akatsuki). But I think (if I remember the scene in Akatsuki's home correctly) in this case we get a similar effect because Akatsuki isn't cooperating with this cosy home. We may never find out whether this is due to her difficult personality, which the café crowd can handle better than her original family, or whether it was caused by her father or even by her mother in the past. (E.g., it's possible that Akane is just putting up a public image of the protective mother. Or she could have changed after realizing she lost emotional access to her daughter.)

Hey guys, how are you all doing?

It's dev log time again, and I've had an intense couple of weeks of development, working on three separate projects at once...

0.12.1
I mentioned last time that I was working on a minor update to version 0.12 with some technical improvements/fixes. Well, it's now finished and released. I've updated all of the links on the 0.12 post if you want to download it, although there isn't any new content, so there's probably not much point if you've already got 0.12. Here's the changelog; I've bolded the one I think will be most interesting to some of you!

  • Fixed an issue where animations would sometimes flash up a bright screen at the start of loading each video
  • Fixed an issue where the top left UI would always display "day 1 | dawn" in replays - it now says "REPLAY"
  • Changed the dawn screen to show the month/date instead of the old day number
  • Moved Annabelle into the main section of the character bios and added tabs for her in the galleries
  • Minor grammatical improvements to a few hundred lines from 0.9 content onwards
  • Fixed a bug where the gallery images for Lucy and Vicky from 0.1 appeared after the more recent images.
The next update - 0.13!
Over the last couple of weeks I've completely written the update, and it comes to exactly 30k words. So, about in keeping with the last two. That means I will stick with the original plan and release it as a two day update.

This one has a lot of fun scenes, and almost all of the girls get at least one smaller but significant moment in their stories. Having said that, the definite winners are Akatsuki, Sarah, Alison, and Catherine. Though I would give honourable mentions to Vicky and Hannah, too. So, something for everyone this time!

New PC and new graphics.
So, the third thing I've been working on, and by far the most frustrating - I mentioned last time that I've been setting up a new rendering PC. Well, it is now set up and fully functional. I'm currently using it to write this dev log!

The new graphics, however, are another story... Getting all of the necessary mods to work together is a nightmare! It also requires me to do some serious work upgrading each and every character model, which at this point is a hell of a lot of models!

At the moment I'm still ploughing ahead with all of this, however if it transpires that it's going to take more time than I can reasonably take away from rendering the update, I may shelve it and just stick with my old software setup for now.

Whichever way it goes, I fully expect to be on the rendering grind for most of the next few months, so the dev logs will probably get a little less interesting - though I should have some nice previews to show you!

And I think that's about all I have to say for this one. As always, thank you all for your support - I really do appreciate it!

Vicki's Mom is super nice too. Edit: Late night mix-up. :(

I just think the fact that the game focuses 95% on a handful of old money/power families that bear a striking resemblance to organized crime famillies has more to do with the mistaken perception that "all" the parents are bad. Yes, Lucy's Mom is also a villain, but she clearly is not mentally stable and i doubt she is representative of all non-Family parents in town [see:Mom, of Vicki]. And Akatsuki's Dad isn't great on the surface, but a good bit of that is probably due to cultural differences + outdated thinking. Thank goodness my parents never said or did anything ridiculously old-fashioned & out-of-touch to embarass me when I was a kid... :LOL: :eek::eek::eek:

I don't remember meeting Vicky's mom. I remember her brother, and talks about her father.
