Since the college mascot is an elk, all my character does now is write Elk erotica, about a college student and her encounter with humanoid elk-men/were-elks/elk-demons.

You'd be surprised how many pervs are out there.

The depute novel "The Elk that shagged me", where the heroine finds out why the mascot is an elk, has sold 429 copies for a total of $2250
"The Elk's Priestess Bride" about becoming the priestess in a cult trying to summon an elder elk god from beyond the stars has now sold 351 copes for a total of $1640

While we'll see how "The Elk's High Club" will do, as she only just published it. It is a bit of a risk, being more about sex on planes and less about story. But the elk in it may return in "The Elk of Wallstreet"*

* It will have to wait though, as currently she is writing "The Elkfather". The blurb: A simple night out has Nelly descend into a world of crime, danger, intrigue and sex, when she drunkenly loses control of her bicycle and crashes into the heir of the Möbelaffär crime family, that runs everything from cheap furniture to expensive whores.

A part of this game is certainly embracing its "life-sim" aspect. Like, sure it'd be neat if you could see a lot of stuff day to day, but honestly with the idea of the game being three years of in-game time, that'd also become kind of really tedious. Mostly because it makes getting through the days trickier, because random events can interrupt the flow.

And really, if stuff is happening constantly, it also doesn't feel really realistic either.

But this is admittedly, kind of a case to case basis. But I think one has to expect this game is going to lean heavy into the life-sim aspect, and just doing a day to day routine as a college student. Then special days here and there to break up the day to day routine, just kind of like real life.

You can't just call things a life sim and use it to justify it having nothing going on.

College is not an endless march of nearly identical days, crushing in their tedium and monotony, and only broken up by random bits of joy. Unless you want a depression simulator, which I can get that, but this game isn't that.

If anything there is TOO much to do during college years, especially on what appears to be a rather large campus. There's tons of new people to meet, new things to do, and discovering things about yourself as an adult with very limited boundaries. All that on top of having to maintain your grades.

You're being pulled in many different directions. Not by deterrents, but because they're things you WANT to do. This game doesn't provide any of this yet. You can't really get to know anyone, because none of the named characters have all that much content to them, and randos are practically interchangeable. The new things are essentially just jingling keys in front of the player, and you can do literally all of them, because they're not developed enough to hold attention and stand on their own. Grades are explicitly a work in progress, so I'll at least give them that, but given the track record, what's even to be expected here? A couple sentences about how you failed and being asked to reload a save?

But that doesn't make things better, it just makes them more inconvenient for the player. Players are sleeping away days because actually playing through isn't compelling. Forcing players to engage with things they don't find engaging will lead to nothing but resentment, and and overall worse experience.

There needs to be actual stuff to see, and there just isn't. It was stated at some point that needs and other systems would guide players into seeing things, but they just don't. They're purely an inconvenience.
I can't imagine doing this. My problem is that the day doesn't have enough hours to do all the stuff for school, earning money, and sleeping around my character is doing. Which is pretty accurate as college goes I suppose.

If you don't enjoy the basic gameplay loop, then the game might not be for you. I'm not saying this as a way to invalidate your criticism. But the colleges sim aspect is the core foundation of the game. If you don't like that, I understand why you would find CoT full of useless/annoying grinding.

But I genuinely really enjoy that part of the game. I could see myself playing a PG version of this game, too. I love juggling studying, sports, making money, parties, hangouts, keeping my fridge supplies and buying new clothes or getting a haircut etc. All these things that you declare as "purely an inconvenience" are things that make CoT one of the best porn games ever for me.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: people need to stop trying to pigeonhole CoT into being a simple sex simulator or treating this game like its' sole purpose is to provide you with sexual gratification. It's always been designed as a life-sim not a porn-sim, and yes I do agree that it needs to be fleshed out across the board for the grinding to be worth it, even for those of us who play it for the sims-esque core gameplay loop. But if you just want to fap, and are treating everything else like an inconvenience which is getting in the way of you achieving that as quickly as you can, then quite frankly this is not going to be the game for you because the tediousness of daily college life will only get worse when more content is added.

Not sure but I think the version on itch.io might be more up to date than what's in the OP. Seems itch has "l" as in "look". Pretty sure that comes after "h".

What, you mean you don't enjoy the attempts of women trying to write men?

I think the biggest difference is that I can remove the "sex combat" from DoL, and it's still a good game. If I remove it from CoT, it's still a bad game, but will arguably improve.

I remember being ok with version 0.2, thinking that it would improve. It was very vanilla then, but that isn't what is wrong with the game. What's wrong with the game is the amount of poorly written scenes that do nothing but waste your time. Do I really need to read about your character being annoyed at people blocking the sidewalk, or having a bumpy ride because you hit a rock while on your bike? What about trying to trip someone? How old am I, five?

None of the above would be things I would consider "interesting". Many of them could be things that you've dealt with, although I've never felt the urge to trip someone (seriously, wtf?). Yet these scenes abound, and they count them when they do a numerical count of new scenes. They're simply misleading because none of that content is fresh. The developers can't come up with anything new, so they go with their tried and true classic "oh look, how annoying!".

From reading the positive reviews and comments, I get the impression that this game is written with a very specific type of person in mind. It appears to be written for someone who is really into the "role-playing" in role-playing games, so they're blind to everything else. They're probably also part of a group that typically doesn't have adult games targeted at them.

The end result is that everything written is low effort, because it doesn't need to be high effort. They have no competitors, so they inevitably end up churning out lazy*, poorly written content that is as wide as an ocean, but as deep as a puddle. You simply do not need to put in the effort to write meaningful content when you have no competition.

The overworld content mainly consists of you walking around, with the developers telling you "look, how lewd!", as though they're one of your great-great-grandmothers. Look at the bus scene for example:

Code:
As you're riding along, you can hear music coming tinnily from some person's headphones. The beat gets to you and you start to sway to rhythm as much as space allows.

You pick up some of the words here and there and gradually, you realize... those lyrics are filthy!

The artist describes in explicit details what they physically like in a partner. And the chorus is even worse, describing what the partner would do for the artist! You can't help imagining the scene. And it's turning you on!

(You spend the rest of the trip trying to hide your arousal and avoiding eye contact.) OR (You didn't expect to get horny from a song, but here you are. Oh well.)
Ok, Maude, how was your tea party with Prudence? Do I really need to explain in detail why the writing is bad?

Almost every interaction written is some form of "X does A to Y" or "Y does B to X". You see it everywhere - at the bar, at parties, in the cafeteria, and during sex. Everything is written with this in mind. The developers cannot imagine something otherwise. If you buy someone a drink, they must react to you to continue the conversation. If they thank you, they must go with a more formal "thank you" instead of "thanks". Why? It's ingrained in their socialization. No matter what though, the conversation must go on - everyone serves as a plaything. There is no failure state. In DoL, three drinks will get you laid, but a fourth will have them pass out. In CoT, you chat until you either bang or go on a date, where you then bang. Every character serves as an interactive pet, even your actual in-game pets (which are the one thing that cannot interact with you... it's a horribly missed opportunity).

Now, as to why they're lazy - they aren't lazy in the typical sense. It's certainly a lot of work churning out content, but none of that content has any consequence. They aren't lazy because they don't put in the work. They're lazy because they take the path of least resistance.

A major problem in this game is that none of the content connects to anything deeper. They like to reuse frameworks (Something happening to your clothes is a framework. Parties are a framework. The same goes with classes, sex, etc.).

I don't think I need to write about clothes and how the developers use that as a crutch when they can't come up with new content.

Consider something like parties - every party functions the same way. A party starts at 6:00 pm and ends at 4:00 am (except for one, I think). There are snacks and drinks. You chat with people. It takes 25 minutes. You ask if they want to bang. You bang, and then go back to the party.

This sounds like many parties in real life, but the point I want to make is this - they want to recycle old content and call it new content by adding something new to it. The Halloween party is such an example. You go in and see one new scene with sexual content, and some scenes involving contests. Everything else stays the same. You see a similar thing in the New Year's Eve party, as well as the Greek parties. It should really make you ask one question - why would you care about these parties if they only offer one or two new things unrelated to the party? You can go further and ask if there is even a point to the parties.

If you pay attention to it, you'll see it everywhere. You even see it after the sex. They hype up aftercare in the development logs, but what do you really get? A few lines of meaningless text, with an option of having sex again. They've reused this framework so they can pretend that they've added content for all the mindless drones getting off over incredibly mechanical descriptions of sex. They can't even get this part right, since you're fully clothed for round 2! How long did it take them to notice that you could cum in someone, even if they didn't want you to, as long as they were in the cowgirl position? Now we have condoms, and we have similar buggy issues - they may or may not want you to wear a condom immediately after saying they do/don't want you to wear one, or they'll ask you to wear one after you're already fucked them. An alternative also exists - you can fuck them in the ass, and the game might mention that it was their least favourite part of sex. They want to be "realistic", but then you'll find out that every girl is fine with you taking turns between their vagina and ass.

The developers churn out all these new scenes because they can't be bothered to actually work on anything else. They barely touch the old content, with only the school mascot being added to clubs. Even there they recycle old content. They removed the ability to interact with other characters, and on game days, you get to waste hours of in-game time seeing a tiny amount of new content.

They don't actually want to work on the content in their roadmap, so everything has an abrupt ending. What happened to new content for QuickieBurger? You have a strike, you get paid more, and it ends there. What about the arcade? It's three days of content masquerading as three weeks. You create a save slot, look at the results for each choice, then never touch the arcade again. The same goes for clubs.

How do these things interact with the rest of the game? They don't. The closest thing would be hangouts/dates, but even then you're only at that location - you aren't interacting with that location, and you don't have characters there recognizing you. You simply get a few blocks of text with non-consequential choices to go over.

The writing is mechanical and your choices are inconsequential. The roadmap serves as a guide so they can tick something off a checklist, even if they don't want to write something for it. This is why the NC and GS content were removed. They couldn't write anything for them, and the content that did exist was very mechanical. I don't think people who are into that type of content would want them to be written that way. It took them a while to realize that not everyone can be satisfied like the degenerates who are into incest and who are happy to bang someone as long as they're called their landlady/landlord/roommate.

I don't think I need to write about the issues with the developers thinking they could replace men and women with each other and having the same effect. That would probably deserve its own separate, but shorter post, and I'm not really interested in writing about that.

tl:dr: The game isn't bad because it's vanilla. It's bad because it's mechanical and the developers are uninspired prudes. You would only be able to enjoy it if you're really into the "role-playing" part of role-playing games or have never played any other game with interactive sex scenes.
It is incredibly hard to write content for these type of games, and my criticism for CoT isn't exclusive to it.

Why do people think there isn't any content for Avery? It's because they aren't connected with the rest of the world. You have a few scenes where they pick you up, perhaps taking Robin with you. Asides from that, they're an offshoot of actual content for the game that you see every Saturday.

There are very few similar games, and thus few competitors. I am using acronyms because this post is not meant as an advertisement for other games.

Consider NL, a game where you have a man trying to write a woman. The gameplay design is repetitive, and content is locked to highly specific stat checks to the point where everything can be viewed as a vignette that you would rather read than actually spend time playing through to unlock.

What about FA? It's a game that has had two rewrites, with the developer stringing everyone along so they can make an update once a year, if that.

What about BS? This was made as a response to FA's bullshit, but the developer has fallen into nearly the same trap as FA. You get more updates, but the updates are incomprehensible walls of text, with an awful user experience forcing you to waste time while text transitions. The game has nearly been out for 1.5 years now, and it still hasn't come out with any spying content. It has literally become the enemy it swore to destroy!

What about LT? Well, the game has not had a real update in years and the developer is absolutely crazy. It has a nice "sex combat" system though.

BDCC? The last time I checked it out, things were repetitive. Do the routes affect each other now? If they don't, it'll have the same problem CoT has.

AW? Can you spend five minutes without hitting a bug?

TiTS? Is everything still superficial?

CoC2? Is the plot relevant?

CoC? It's been years since I've played it, and I don't think it's fair to say anything because of that.

I could list a few others, but I hope you get my point.

When you have few competitors, it does not take much to stand out. Do you want your game to be tagged under a certain category? All you need is a few lines written halfheartedly, and then you can claim that you have that content, even if you're not interested in writing about it.

Games like DoL and NL can get away with their transgressions because they understand the absurdities in what they have written. CoT doesn't do that.

I think things could be improved if the writing wasn't so superficial and they focused on connecting things together when they write. How does the arcade exist as a living, breathing environment relative to the rest of the world? Why would I care about choosing between cereal and pancakes for breakfast? Does it increase immersion when I have a giant wall of choices, but not the choices that I want? A question could be asked about why cheats exist. Are people using them because they rightfully realize that the content is superficial and that nothing connects with anything else outside of its own branch? You see posts about how people are skipping a week at a time by sleeping 10 hours until a week passes. Is there possibly a reason for that?

The characters that do exist exist as shallow tropes. Kyler in DoL is a trope, but they're fleshed out. You can interact with them. There are full storylines with them that actually affect the world. What is the equivalent in CoT? Characters exist as randomly generated beings with a tag slapped on top of them. Besides the harasser (who has been mostly ignored), are there any characters with more than a few superficial lines? The closest one I can think of is the admirer.

Having meaningful focused content would go a long way towards improving the game.

I don't know why you have problems admitting that men have problems with writing women, and that women have problems with writing men. My snarky comment exists to call out the elephant in the room - they aren't actually spending any time doing that. What they do is remove most of the clothing-specific content, then flip a few words around. You can easily see this in the shower scene where you lose you clothes (why would they choose to grab you by the elbow?) as well as when you pass the construction site as a guy. The absurdities of the situations could serve as social commentary, but given how the game tries to stay "grounded" along with the issues I've mentioned in this and the previous post, I can only conclude that the developers think it's a good idea to flip things around for men and call it a day.

This isn't about women being unable to write men. ORS, LLtP, and Int* all prove that's not the case. The issue is specifically with the people involved in this game thinking it's ok to flip things around and say that there's a lot of content for men too. It's funny in how lazy it is.

I covered this in my discussion of frameworks. I expect a Mardi Gras party lasting from 6:00 pm to 4:00 am with a few paragraphs of "content" in the next few months. It'll be listed in the development logs.

It's prudish because it's mechanically written, often followed with something similar to "well, that was hot". This game suffers from a "tell, don't show" mentality, so the bus scene I mentioned in my previous post is as generic as possible. Just what are the participants in that song doing? Nothing about it is written. You're only told that it is lewd. The writing is reminiscent of magazine covers. Shocking. "I hate your <description of body part>. Brutal." "Whew... free use cheerleaders. You could get used to this."

Now, how could free use possibly sound prudish? Well, you get a line or two about whether or not they're into it, then it's just the mechanical game of twister all over again. They can't even come up with something as unimaginative as keeping their underwear after sex. The closest thing you get is the choice in the laundry room where you can decide to keep the underwear of an unknown person. You're never confronted about this, and you don't seem to be able to do anything with them. It's purely mechanical, like everything else. Even starring in porn is susceptible to this. There's no spontaneity in the writing. Almost everything is predictable.

This is the idea that made me remove my status as a lurker. The idea that it was payment processors that forced their hand is something I cannot believe. Itch.io took a step back from their actions, and there were no further actions taken by the other platform providers or payment processors. Notably, CoT freely chose to comment out the content and bow down to the payment processors before anything had been done. Other developers did not. With the available information and how shallow and sterile the GS content was, you only have two possible conclusions. They are either spineless, or they were never comfortable with the content in the first place.
This is all very harsh but absolutely true. There's a recurring pattern in the development of these types of lifesim games that goes something like this:
  1. Brainstorm a bunch of incredibly ambitious ideas and features for a new lifesim game.
  2. Lay the groundwork for all of those features, with the intention that they'll be developed later.
  3. Begin to churn out content, playerbase starts getting hyped.
  4. Realize that the sheer scope of the game was much larger than expected, continue working on the easiest parts of the game like side-stories and one-off scenes while struggling to actually integrate the other features with the rest of the game.
  5. Development of planned and underdeveloped features slows down as a result of a fundamentally flawed and bloated codebase, bickering between devs and writers, and personal issues.
  6. Game ends up being a collection of mostly isolated game systems and narratives.
I think lifesims are a bit of a trap for developers since they can appear to be fairly straightforward to make since they're mostly text-based CYOA games in a sandbox, and they represent a possibility for huge replayability without needing to write manually write specific scenes for every possible permuatation.

What isn't super obvious is how the procedural, highly customizable aspects of the game ends up being constrained by the writing requirements for the narrative scenes and vice versa.

This issue makes sense from programming perspective if you think about the sheer amount of various game states of the storylines, characters, and gameworld that are tracked as part of a big hierarchical state machine. Every new gameplay feature and storyline branch that gets added represents a further state explosion in terms of possibilities as they compound on each other. The mechanical writing qfqwr is complaining about is the direct result of the CoT devs trying to account for the abundance in possible states that the game could have. Good prose is highly context dependent, and these scenes have to be written with less context to make them be coherent with the various possibilities a run might have.

Does that mean satisfying games in this genre are impossible? Not necessarily, but from what I can tell lifesims need to have relatively strong constraints on either the story elements or gameplay elements. Limiting the story elements seems to result in the most satisfying outcomes when it comes to adding more lifesim gameplay features.

I'd argue that the games that start with a constrained story concept, despite not always being seen as sandbox games, end up having the most rewarding sandbox gameplay elements because when those features are added they can be integrated with the rest of the story in a straightforward manner.

As for the idea of a lifesim with sandbox story elements and constrained gameplay, I don't think I have seen this attempted yet. Probably because it would involve coming up with a limited set of potential game states, then trimming that list down even further for the first iteration, and then doing a ton of writing that takes into account the various permutations of those game states. It's not very exciting to plan out as it would involve lots of boring planning as well as being a buzzkill that shoots down cool ideas.

The term "life-sim" is misleading here, because life-sim games are actually story-simulators (think like The Sims and Stardew Valley). People play these games to create their own stories and experience unique ones that arise from the various procedurally generated systems actually interacting with each other. Not because they like making their character have to peepee every few in-game hours.

The delayed gratification in CoT is utterly meaningless. The lifesim elements contribute very little to the available narratives and exist mainly to serve as busywork tasks that spread out the porn content. I'm confused as to what is immersive about doing your own laundry or going to the bathroom in this game. There's no progression or story consequence for doing them. They're just a bunch of bumps in the road that only exist to be inconveniences.

Gaben said it best:
"You'd have these conversations where you'd be sitting in a design review and somebody would say, that's not realistic. And you're like, 'okay, what does that have?' like, 'explain to me why that's interesting.' Because in the real world, I have to write up lists of stuff I have to go to the grocery store to buy. And I have never thought to myself that realism is fun. I go play games to have fun."

Good take! I mostly agree, but I think the game could be even better if the developers added stories to go along with the new features. Without a story, there’s a downside: while the new Greek houses content is fun, players might only keep playing to unlock all the scenes and try every possible combination, which can hold their interest for a while. In contrast, heavily story-driven games often wrap up once you finish the new content, leaving little reason to continue/retry. Right now, there’s no real incentive to play through every in-game day for months. Adding exams, graduation, and fleshed-out character storylines would make everything click. Until then, we’re mostly just testing out new mechanics rather than experiencing a progressing plot. It seems like the game’s core audience is more excited about new mechanics than story development for now.

I actually think the two examples you listed (peeing and doing laundry) aren't particularly useful in your example, since (assuming watersports is active) not going to the bathroom would lead to watersports and humiliation content and washing your clothes can lead to you getting stuck in the dryer and getting played with or fucked if your disinhibition is high enough. I get if you're trying to play a dominant character and you wouldn't be interested in those scenes, but there is some reward for interacting with those systems.

I agree with your larger point, though. I have four major issues with the game as is.

1. Lack of content for dominant PCs. I like to play as a switch in most games, but in this one I usually just end up being a sub most of the time, because the interactions are just more and better for subs.

2. Clunkiness of the sex scene system. The system straight up doesn't support multiple partners in sex, especially multiple AFAB partners. If I want to have an orgy with my polycule, I straight up can't invite anyone with a vagina because they will cock/pussy block my other partners. Even in one on one scenes, I've noticed the NPCs can get hyperfixated on doing one particular thing in that scene, even ignoring their inclinations or my own.

3. Too much filler, especially in class and practice. I think this speaks for itself.

4. Now what? Congrats! You completed a sidequest! Do you get unique repeatable scenes with the special NPC whose story you progressed? Sometimes, kinda, not really. Do you get anything special for completing a teams content and winning the big game? Haven't tried the mascot yet, but mostly not. Even when you complete a quest, you might get a cool one off scene, but usually your reward is "now you can date this npc and use the clunky procedural sex scene system." If they're a special NPC, I'd like a special scene. And I'd like to be able to repeat that scene or a variation of that scene if progression leads to a relationship. Progressing a special NPCs story usually leads to them becoming... less special. I saved it for last, but this is the one that bugs me the most.

I've played a mascot character for a while and so far I've got.
1 Some upskirt looks during practice
2 Eventually you start shooting panties out of your Tshirt gun, and can ask a cheerleader for a reload. If they agree they make you pay them back (you know, sexually) after the game.
But holy shit did it take a long time to unlock them. There might be more after that, and I think the dev is on record that the mascot route is still a work in progress, but so far it seems lacking.

If you want double penetration there is a gangbang mod that does that. You can find it in the modding discord. The Dev is a lurker here too.

I dont understand the "you don't get" thing. You played a side quest with unique dialogue and "get" fun. There are no trophies or archive tents to collect here. This is not a completion ist game

I think what they mean is once you finish a "unique" NPCs 'questline', you don't really... get anything?
Like as an example, with the BFF. Sure you can start dating them, or make them a fuckbuddy. That's a small reward. But the thing is, they don't seem to have anything unique after that. They're now just another generic NPC, far as your interactions are concerned.

You don't have all the unique, purely textual sex scenes from before anymore.

That being said, getting to 'unlock' them for normal interactions is kind of a reward, it's just the sex system can be a little wonky. And it just sort of takes away from their uniqueness, because afaik they just act like any other NPC in them. They don't have unique interactions or anything during sex scenes.

I agree here. Unique Npcs should retain their unique quirks. And there needs to be more of unique dialogue for them, regardless if they are in a relationship with you or not.

But I like the steady pace the Dev is posting updates. Since I actually like the sex system I hope this games gets equally full of content like Degree of Lewdity.

There's barely any content for sub PC as well, besides their Mistress (or Master) ambushing them to see if they follow the clothing rules and PC subbing in the library Saturday meetings, and both of these have dom counterparts. The only thing that comes to mind is that classmate bully questline has slightly more content for sub PC than dom. There's also roommate's boyfriend/girlfriend, but their dares hardly go as proper dom/sub content.

I honesty would want higher level exhibitionist to have more content. Why can't my level 10 pc, walk around naked in the soritory? Why can't she streak during the footbal game, without the pledge stuff?
I think that's a good idea, but aside from that, all the pledge tasks that become inaccessible should probably stay accessible in some way. Why can't I declare myself free use every thursday? I did it once, after all, and the first time is always the hardest.
