From an in-lore perspective I would say since we are traveling worlds others could have done so as well and brought over english and influenced the local language earlier in time. Also why the elf speaks English + something Celtic-like? Wouldn't it make more sense for them to not know what they're hearing from each other and having to use the context of their actions + gestures to communicate?
From a writing perspective this makes communication and dialogues easier for both writer and reader and it makes more sense for when the language barrier likely gets resolved rather quickly. If they can't understand each other at all you often see the yada-yada-something (spells, unexplained instant learning, fish in your ear that translates for you, etc) for them to 'suddenly' understand each other from 0 to 100 later on.
I think I like this setup more.
