Was this his full time gig? If not: as a dev I'll say: this has 100% been the case of every side project I've ever started or worked on. When it stops being fun it reeeeaaaally gets hard to work on your passion project.

If I remember correctly, it was a full-time job for the artist, but a side project for the programmer. Since he had a family to support, they had to shut down this game temporarily (according to them, at least). They committed one of the cardinal sins of a beginner: being overambitious. This game runs on their own handmade engine because they wanted to show off and advertise the 2.5D engine they were making.

One of the devs stated that he had to literally sell his stuff to keep the project on going, but even doing that has to end a some point

So they decided to put the game on the backburner for the time being, and create a small game to earn money that can be used to continue the development of this game

I think they even get into a partnership with an adult games company and are launching the game on Steam

I haven't tried all of these, so I can't say if my recommendations are going to be exactly what you're looking for, but I really like Inari and May's Summer Vacation.

This game is absolute ass and no one is convincing me otherwise. Minigames suck, aren't fun at all, money grinding is so unnecessary and you'll get more from quests then doing ANYTHING else because everything else in this game is boring. Running system is stupid, characters are as dry as sandpaper, most of the stories are nonsensical, music is mid, and the only positivity about this game is its character art.

I could go a 1 on 1 breakdown about how this is horrendous but I'd much rather not. You'd have more fun just cheating to get the entire gallery then playing this. 90% of the "positive" content in this is basically incest so if you're way into that bleh then this game is for you. I seriously don't blame whoever developed this for abandoning it.

You aren't far off on the rest - the updates made the story and characters much worse and the map sprawled out to a miserable degree. It could very much use a new layout and better bus stops. Some of the mini-games were fun, but that's all subjective.

The mission design is bad, as you said there is no point in making money, you only need to buy items in a few missions. But it is very successful in terms of city and characters. I think some choices may have gone this way due to the game engine. Still, it's a game with its own unique style. It wouldn't be as good if Ren'py was used.

I think the game would still be as good if it was a RPGM game, it'd probably be one of the best looking RPGM games too

the minigames take too much time to make and just makes development time go to somewhere when it should be going to more art and scenes so I agree there
