In Celebration of the Beauty in "Average"

TL;DR "Average" women can be sexy as fuck!


I work part-time in a high-end wine/charcuterie restaurant and have the pleasure of meeting many women that are drop-dead sexy but are nowhere near the proportions DAZ and character creators consider "normal".
This has led me down a rabbit-hole of real-life research into the "average" proportions of American women ages 19-45 showing the discrepancies between DAZ normal and real-life normal.
Firstly, I am 6ft 1in (185cm) tall. Pretty tall by normal standards. It is very rare that I meet women that are as tall or taller than me but the default G8F character is 6ft (183cm) tall and many popular G8F models are actually 6ft 2in (188cm) tall. This is far from typical or average but considered "normal" in the DAZ world.
So I started really digging into the differences between "DAZ normal" vs. "real-life normal"

Let's first look at DAZ normal:

Default G8F Measurements
  • Height 6ft (183cm) (Height morph can only get it down to 5'7" (170cm)... Still 3in or 18cm taller than real-life 'average')
  • Bust 36in (91cm)
  • Under Bust 30in (76cm)
  • Waist 26in (66cm)
  • Hips 38in (96cm)

Then look at the actual average measurements of a 19-45yo American woman...

US Women's Average Measurements*
  • Height 5ft 4in (162cm)
  • Weight 170 lbs
  • Bust 39in (99cm)
  • Avg Under bust 30in (76cm)
  • Avg Waist 39in (99cm)
  • Avg Hips 43in (109cm)
*Different countries have slightly different averages

Mmmm... some big differences.
In the USA, only 1% of women are 6ft tall or taller but DAZ 'normal' is 6ft to 6ft 2in tall. Funny that so many G8F character designers hype their bodies as hyper-realistic when just the height alone is very unrealistic.
The countries with the tallest 'average' height for women are Latvia and the Netherlands, still only measuring in at an average of 5ft 7in (170cm) tall.

I've really started factoring this in when working with females in DAZ... 99.9% of Daz characters are very un-normal when compared to real-life drop-dead sexy women. It would be a very strange world if all of the women you encountered were all 6ft-6ft 2in tall

Enter "Alice".
Realistic proportions, far from DAZ normal but still sexy as fuck and more realistic
  • Height 5ft 8in (174cm)
  • Bust 38in (96cm)
  • Under bust 32in (81cm)
  • Waist 33in (84cm)
  • Hips 46in (117cm)

She would be considered "plus-size" by the fashion world. Search DAZ assets for plus-sized women and this is the crap you get...

Here in the netherlands are woman are tall:

1.70 m73.2 kg

According to:
Our woman have the highest average

Men:
1.84 m87.9 kg

So DAZ isn't that far off.

And my point is that realistic is very much dependent on region (as you also mentioned)
But when i think of realistic characters i think more of skin and proportions. This is why i am a huge fan Of Bjue Jauntes characters:

Agreed. Proportions for me are a BIG factor. Some artists design women's bodies as if they have never seen a real-life woman, just anime, plastic surgery porn stars or anorexic teens.
Thanks for the link to that artist! I agree, the characters are much more realistic than most

I'm a big fan of "real" build and proportions. But, at the end of the day, none of these are real people and a huge part of art is stylizing your subject. Often this is done by highlighting what the artist finds attractive and the easiest way to highlight something is to enlarge it.

It does look really strange to me to see hyper-realistic texturing and lighting applied to hyper-exaggerated body proportions, but to each their own.

I would much rather see people learning how to better represent age. Older women don't all have massive tits and huge asses so it's even more jarring to me to see somebody that's suppose to look old with the eyes, lips, neck and hands of a 19-year old. But again, art... so yeah, to each their own :)

Personally, I don't care so much about the actual height and I often adjust that to make the pose or lighting fit the scene better since it's pretty easy to adjust the character model rather than multiple scene assets. Window too high? Make the character taller! Door handle too low? Make the character shorter!

Hello friends, sorry for interrupting the conversation. In my country, the average height of women is 5' to 5' 6" and I am making the game with real heights, anatomy (as much as I can) but as the good friend said above, none of DAZ are real-life persons, they are just 3D models. I also have that bad experience with choosing characters from the Daz store because most of the Myanmarese short girls have shorter abdomen and pelvic heights, lengths which are making DAZ assets not conforming well to those adjusted morphs. Also in chest parts, Myanmarese girls who have large breasts usually have much-defined creases under the breast that also makes Daz wearables conforming not so well.

In the future, I really wish genesis 9, or I don't know that may have some good built-in weight maps and correctives, shapes according to heights variations. Fix me if I am giving some misinformation and thank you for that!

In real life, I have a daughter that is 24yo and only 4'10" lol

Thanks, I am still trying to be better.

My daughter is still a child so I will wait and see how height she will be in the future, may come back here with the answer when she has grown up into adult! :D
