download gimp, open image, filters, enhance, despeckle, radius 1,black level -1, white level 256, apply
also rendering the image at a larger resolution then downsizing helps too

I've really found that cutting back to a single light source helps with renders immensely, no post work or downsizing necessary. Scenes are still a bit much for my computer hardware though...
