What causes this?
Poor geometry of the asset?

Or, the fact I loaded a different asset's Mat onto it?

I also noticed another Gen 8 which will only Render up to Subd level 2.

This is the latest update Genesis Starter Essentials...

You can try to remove it through hidden parameters.

Thanks, I'm still apprehensive about updating the software, as I run it on a 2018 mac mini with no Nvidia card.

That's an old issue with v4.22 of Daz Studio and a component found in some OOT hairs that needs to be up to date. Besides updating to v4.23, your other only choice is having your faulty outoftouch hair updated. See here for further info:

Outoftouch has updated many, but not quite all, of the affected hairs. Actually, there is only one file that has been modified, and it is common to all Hairblending products from OOT. All you really need is to install at least one of the updated hairs and it will correct the problem for all OOT hairs that use Hairblending 2. Just don't install one later that hasn't been updated. The file in question is "\data\outoftouch\OOT Hairblending 2\OOT Hairblending 2 Hair\OOT Hairblending Hair.dsf", with a date from January, 2023.
