At the very beginning you're supposed to explore the south to look for water, but nothing seems to happen. I can select who goes, but when I click on 'South', nothing happens. Am I just using the UI wrong?

Well, you select south on the top right.
The direction on the bottom is for the reserve pair. For example, if you go somewhere with only one girl instead of the whole group and toggle "send the reserve pair to explore", the other 2 girls will go in the selected area (and will bring back ressources, but lose stamina).
