Do you think games are becoming too "mainstream?"

I think we've strayed too far from the original topic of this thread, and perhaps am even guilty of this myself.

The answer to the question after reading these posts is no.

No, games are NOT becoming too mainstream, because its very clear people have varied tastes in kinks, how projects are funded, what money can be made, what tools can be used, and if anything games are not mainstream enough. The more mainstream porn games become, the more funding will be available create a solid game - which can counter the fanboy desire to steer a game in the wrong direction.

If the Patreon only model continues, you are going to see a lot of games that cater only to the wishes of Patrons, and not stick to their original premise. Also, you'll continue to see low budget, but solid concepts use out of date programs because they are too poor/too obscure to get decent funding to support a team of developers who can purchase/use better tools.

Of course, there's always going to be a glut of games that just plain suck and shouldn't get funded anyway.

I don't know if we'll ever get to the point where all kinks are fully in the mainstream though. Just imagine pitching to the bank that you need a 500,000 dollar loan on an incest game where the protagonist sleeps with his mom, his older sister, younger sister, aunt, teachers, friends moms, classmates, and a few random escorts along the way. And then having to reveal to the investors that there's a twist in your game because the MC is actually an inbred time traveller, and is actually the father of all the teachers, friends moms, and classmates in the game after he invents time travel and goes back in time to cuck all their 'dads'.

Very true, but the alternatives are either Kickstarter and the likes, or creators on Patreon not go "throw money at my face to bend my game to your will". Cashing in is very tempting and understandably so, as various examples on this very site have shown us.
And there's also the problem of alienating your supporters if you start somewhat vanilla and then feel like treading in more niche waters, so you get effectively locked in.

Hopefully as games go more mainstream, you'll find more avenues of support for them. Perhaps even angel investors for the reallly great ones. Of course, Angel investors themselves often try to control projects, maybe they'd be less likely to get too involved with porn ones, who knows.

I'd be surprised if we ever get to the stage of investors seeking out indie devs making porn games to invest in. I think it's more likely that we might see something like a tab for adult games on pornhub or something where you could easily search for most any adult game you want and maybe even see ads for the popular ones when you're surfing porn. You head over to porn hub or some other site and look for incest for instance and an add for Milfy City pops up. You search for sorority girls and an ad for Being a DIK pops up. That sort of thing. I'm sure they'd want a cut of your revenue if they were serving up ads for you but that would potentially bring you a bunch of customers as well so that would make up for it.

What's holding adult games back now IMO is that to find many of these games you wind up on sketchy pirate sites (no offense to F95) or porn sites that typically have a higher risk of serving up malware and stuff. Literally the only time I have EVER found a virus in anything I downloaded, it was from a pirate site or a porn site. People don't want to risk that. There's not really any socially acceptable place to go looking for adult games.
