You'd have to start a new regardless the mod, unless you have a save from 0.9, because surprise surprise, save games were fucked again by the devs.
I've just edited my post with the link for the version 0.9.x (0.9.1 don't have new content for male route, and I've not yet finished the 2 others routes).
And no you normaly don't have to restart a new game, personaly I has no problem to load my save from 0.7 to 0.8 or from 0.8 to 0.9, just got the warnning and clicked on "continue" and that worked for me.
