About the card, why not including an encyclopedia app in the phone. Or something like that, the player can consult them, but it is purely optional.
Our protagonist should be aware there is money to be made from this card game from the very beginning.
One doesn't need to be sure he or she has a special talent in the game to think if the price of card is that high, he or she could try to sell a card, he or she doesn't need. Or at least try to trade it.
I think it came down to my major concern about the protagonist other that the fact that he doesn't say any intelligent sentence. He is not proactive. He can take the opportunities that present themselves to him, but he doesn't try to create some. When I play him, he comes across as overly passive.
About the French teacher, I shall inform you that I didn't read in a seductive tone.
Perhaps you could think about adding some extra cues for a player like myself. Before her last sentence, she could, for instance, put a hand on his shoulder, or maybe whisper the final words. This could also be helpful for those who aren't fluent in French.
