Something relating to his personal life forced him to stop. I think (which means I can't confirm this) someone very close to him learned about this and did not approve.

All the ones I tried so far, actually. It's weird, Paint can open them, browsers can open them, but the default windows photo program just hangs up. Suspicious, even.

That's a little concerning. It could be the file headers but I've got no idea, I've always found Windows photo viewer unreliable and switched to Irfanview ages ago.
