Yes, you are absolutely right. It's a game whose main focus is on farming, crafting and later on rpg elements. I also don't think anyone should play this game for the romances, because they are also not that intense and it takes a long time until you see something of your LI's path. It's more like Dragon Age badly compared, an adventure game with homoerotic content and a let's say untraditional love with some men.Damn ur on fire. Giving off one good point after another. Based on what I datamined as well (I'm sorry I can't shut up about it), these endings are probably about the paths. These paths have almost little to do with Britt's gender (or who Britt is to them) and more about the captain's storylines (or who the Captain will be at the end of the story). This could basically just be 2 or 3 worth of lines and utmost 2 special CGIs after C9.
Maybe it has some impacts every now and then about the game (such as C4's Civil War or C5 Confidence Borge declining a runka), but the game is carefully structured not to make any changes that are too drastic to avoid bugs. Renpy is a pretty rudimentary engine after all.
The best example for this is actually Jostein. Bringing Filippa to Alfheimr on C5 barely has any effect on Jostein's storyline because one way or another, she's always gonna get sick in C6 ending. If she's in Himinbjorg, the cold is gonna get her. If she's in Alfheimr, it's the baby.
They did this because whether or not Filippa: (1) is well, (2) sick/miscarriage, or (3) dead, then the devs would be obligated to make at least 5 new Jostein events for each possibility moving forward from C7 to C9. That's 15 events per chapter, wherein players can only really view 5 per playthrough. But that's not what they did. Doing so would be too laborous for a pretty scarce payoff.
My point is, the devs making Britt trans for a few paths is highly unlikely cause they would basically have to double their amount of code. I guess they can make Britt trans in the main storyline (not just something that will be triggered because Jostein is too straight), but that would completely close off Kirk's and Ralf's romance paths + just mess up the narrative. Again, more problems.
I get that all these rising sentiments is really just a complex frustration that the game is not designed to be masc4masc. And on that point, I agree with poplo440's point that it doesn't suffice to label this as a "gay game". However, it is for a different reason. The worldbuilding and lore has evolved beyond making this a simple wank material. All these discourse on how femme Britt should be hardly matters to me in contrast to the plot.
Lastly, the itch description does explicitly say "for LGBT adults" and "If you are looking for porn, you may not like this game". It does say "Boys' Love" and "Gay" in the tags but I reckon it's for SEO purposes. This game is still pretty gay after all – just a really complex metamodern type of gay.
I have already seen the confusion, apparently the protagonist does not transition gender, something I appreciate, since at no time does he imply that he does not feel comfortable as a man. I hope that when the game is complete they remove the relationship simulator tag thing because honestly 80/90% of the game is grinding and do quests related to the story, no love story. The game will be a bit gay, but almost all the sexual relationships shown in the game are between a man and a woman or orgies. It is homoerotic not gay, I understand that for the sake of reaching more people through the tags as you say, they sell it as boys love, but seeing a handjob between two men in 80 hours of gameplay and in that same period of time have seen 5 or more sexual relations between man and woman, orgies etc, I don't know. The main character is gay that's true, but the main plot is not based on relationships, it's like if they sell you Mass Effect as a relationship simulator, because you can have a relationship with a teammate if you feel like it.
I don't care if there is explicit sex or not, I'm not looking to jerk off playing this kind of videogames, I'm more interested in the relationships between characters and what they make you feel, that things that make you say, damn, I wish I could live something like that. What I've played so far, it's not just that I don't feel that way, but I feel sorry for even Britt, he's more miserable in love than I am, at least he balances it out by being some kind of demigod haha.
I want to emphasize that my review is from chapter 3 onwards, which is when the LI is established, chapters 1 and 2 made me be addicted to the video game and are true to what they say on their itch.io page. I honestly gave up the game at chapter 5, because it is not worth everything you have to do to see any progress in your route because the route ceases to be important due to the main plot, and to play an RPG I have Divinity which is super long and fun.
All this aside, the game is very good and I'm glad they are managing to finish the project with the support they have gotten.
Edit: When I'm talking about relationships, im referring to love relationships no friendships.
