Okay - I'm gonna be the downer in this thread.

This is the first time I have ever had mixed feelings about an Eternum update.

We'll clear the good stuff first. The VN has never looked better. I'm astonished at how good the vast majority of renders are in this update. The image quality is unbelievable, and I don't know what Caribdis is using, but I am pretty sure he is not running the stock lighting in HS2, because his outdoor scenes just look incredible. I also believe he's rendering 16k images and downscaling, because so much information is preserved, and all the lines are so clean with a complete lack of jaggies. It's not just an AA implementation.

As usual, the humour is wonderful... With the caveat that there is one miss, and it is an absolutely MASSIVE miss for me.

And now the biggest downer of the update.

A lack of respect for the reader's time.

No, this isn't a complaint about the length of the episode in general. More Eternum is always good, right? Well, in this case, no. No it isn't.

There are two major-MAJOR parts of the update that kill the pace and the flow of the narrative to such a degree that they actually made me angry. One in particular is a very sizeable clanger that has the potential to spoil the episode entirely for those sensitive to it.

The "lesser-major" pace killer is the opening scene. Two characters we have never met before, and will probably never meet again, having a full on conversation about political inclinations and accusations of laziness that completely outstays its welcome as we ponder the answer to "what happened to Orion?"

There were so many more interesting opening scenes that could have been used that involved characters we know and grant good character development. Nova biting her nails, wondering where Orion has gone? Nancy on the server, concerned about them being late, Luna passing by the blood stain and getting a bad feeling about it...

And then there is a resolution to the cliffhanger:

In summary, Eternum remains one-of, if not the best AVN out there. This episode, was overall, pretty awesome. However I do think Caribdis made some pretty major writing missteps in this update, enough that I have mixed feelings about it and for the first time, and feel a little deflated about some aspects of the AVN, where previously I had been unanimously positive for every update. Inflated, you could say.

The Dalia bad end sneak peek seems to have been a fake out?
I've missed a couple of the past sneak peeks, could you please point me in the right direction to find what you were referring to? Like, was there some images showing what could be potentially be a bad ending for Dalia, mortal ending, or something like OIALT (IMO, I highly doubt Caribdis would repeat it). Thanks in advance!

So I tried searching but came up empty...did anyone translate what Chang and his mom said when she literally picked him up at the bus stop? :ROFLMAO:
Mom: Wang Chang! You stupid raccoon! I've said you should get your ass back to the restaurant as soon as you finish buying groceries! Why are you sitting there?!
Chang: I'm on my way! I'm just saying goodbye to my friends!

All penetration sex scenes and two of them involve defloration and we are finally in the plot of Princess's real birthplace! This update is like an early Christmas gift for me, thank you Caribdis for your mastery:love:!

The Stanley Parable sequence is quite frankly, the worst chunk of content Caribdis has ever produced across both his games. On its own, it's not offensive (although a dated reference), but where it occurs in the story has the effect of completely tanking the pacing, removing the characters from their forward momentum towards their goal... And most importantly, it is purposeless.

There is context to consider here. The new world "arc" has already been split by occuring between two updates. We already got derailed by the 8 months of development. To have it then interrupted again for a one-note joke that lasts from 30 to 45 minutes, has no relevance to the new world plot (and can barely be considered an obstacle), and has such a different vibe from what happens before and after it, that it feels like a complete break. It is a thoroughly annoying sequence. The idea of Orion confronting his fears of what might happen to the girls in the future if he fuck's up is a good one. However, I think that this was both a poor execution of that idea, and I know it was a wholly inappropriate place for it to be put in the grand scheme of the story.
I mean, there's that. Not sure if it's entirely purposeless tho since it serves to speed up Orion's decision to declare his love for the girls instead of dilly-dallying on the issue (which is likely what made him manifest the Stanley Parable-esque nightmare to begin with).

The "lesser-major" pace killer is the opening scene. Two characters we have never met before, and will probably never meet again, having a full on conversation about political inclinations and accusations of laziness that completely outstays its welcome as we ponder the answer to "what happened to Orion?"
I feel like this is a meta reiteration of a point Cari made on Discord about Eternum and Ulysses being so ingrained in the setting that the removal of both (which was part of a discussion regarding the possibility of the third game being set in a future where Ulysses and Eternum cease to be) is hard to fathom, so a future without them could have potential fucked up consequences to the world and might set up an ending where Orion and co KEEP Eternum running to prevent that (tho I'm not sure how you can reconcile that with the fact that the VRMMO is an uncontrollable mess that's already falling apart as is).

That, and it serves as extra worldbuilding fluff for those who want it (same with the Raul meeting during Annie's date).
