Fate/Stay Night is Type-Moon's flagship visual novel, and for good reason. There is so much to love in this game alone, not even considering the sequel and, of course, the massive universe and IP this title created.
Fate/Stay Night is a story about morality, family, love, and heart- and I'd say that the heart alone makes it worth reading. Nasu's prose is incredibly dense and descriptive, lending the reader the opportunity to truly immerse themselves in the world the story creates, which most importantly helps you connect to the characters. I genuinely believe that Fate has the greatest cast of any visual novel ever, from their designs to their writing. Shirou is the PROTAG and he's GOATED, that's how you know the entire cast is cool. I literally love every character; they are all so well-written and fun to talk about/explore. You really learn to love the main cast of characters and the way that the mystery of the plot unravels around their actions and behavior. The twists in this VN are absolutely diabolical and will stick with you forever, because you really do learn to care. It's an incredibly emotional and memorable experience that truly makes your time and investment pay off. Every route is stellar, and the final route, HF, is one of my favorite stories of all time, in any medium.
This game has such a good sense of humor. I didn't know where else to put this, but yeah.
There are definitely criticisms to be made of Nasu's overexplanatory nature and of Takeuchi's art and inconsistency through the VN's cgs, but there is a certain charm to a Type-Moon VN that you just can't find anywhere else. Mahoyo is better written, and has a different artist, but Nasu's soul really makes these experiences, ya know? And speaking of F/SN as an experience, holy. The soundtrack and voice acting are STELLAR. Any version of the OST hits hard, and it really is full of memorable, devastating, and comforting tracks all the like. It's peak. The voice acting is incredibly iconic, and I really can't think of a single property where characters were better cast, besides maybe the Metal Gear series. Every performance is stellar, man.
Yeah, I guess the world-building is also good. There are some heavy exposition dumps in this novel, but the game does its best to make it interesting, and what's great is that it's usually relevant to a character you care about. It's quite the heavy read, emotionally and content-wise, but it's worth sticking out.
I know no one is going to get their mind changed by a random review of a random VN on a random site, but if you've read this far, you have enough interest for me to tell you to at least take the plunge. I have said as LITTLE as possible so you can really enjoy this game blind. It's a wonderful time.
