Pretty much, yes. I mentioned this elsewhere (can't remember in which thread exactly), but any developer who's purposefully prolonging their game is shooting themselves in the foot. The opportunity costs of stalling a title are enormous. People don't realize there's orders of magnitude more money to be made in publishing a finished game than stretching out even a successful one on Patreon/SubscribeStar. And every completed title acts as free advertisement for all subsequent ones - it's like having a bunch of billboards in front of your players' eyes.I think its undervalued how much having completed titles under your belt goes than just one game that goes on forever.
I always laugh when people here on F95 accuse this or that dev of "milking" their supporters. I'm not saying some devs don't do this, but in 99% of cases it's always better to finish and publish a title, than draw it out. Steam alone has over 1 billion users, and not even the most wildly successful crowd-supported titles come anywhere near that kind of market reach and potential revenue stream. The reason most adult games take so long to complete is probably due to poor organization/mismanagement and lack of clear direction, than any pre-planned deceit on the devs' part. And for the latter, they'd still be better off publishing the damn thing - it'd bring in more money than crowdfunding ever could.
Now we just gotta get Gaben to give us more collective exposure, and we'd be all set!
