Ok, I feel this delved into a lot of sad stories about ancient Chinese patriarchal customs, (which were, like all patriarchal customs, quite awful) so, to bring it back a bit to the point Aseratrix made earlier about steppe nomads being far better on women's rights and cheer the thread up a bit, the Manchu Qing dynasty, who were originally steppe nomads, outlawed foot binding in China and during some of their emperors severely punished all men that had their daughters deform their feet like that. Then it unfortunately resurged as a practice again in the post 1911 republican era, before it was finally outlawed for good by the Communist party after the 1949 revolution.
